While in Illinios, Johathan served in the Black Hawk War. In 1853, followed his brother Richard west and moved his family to Oregon, settling on a donation land claim of 320 acres eight miles south of Oregon City in Beaver Creek, Oregon. The 1860 Clackamas County, Oregon census lists the J.B. & Margaret Howard family one household from the F.T. Howard family, Jonathan's nephew. On November 12, 1865, Jonathan went to visit his brother Richard. While there, he collapsed and died. Richard also died that same day. Jonathan is buried in the Carus, Oregon cemetery. Margaret lived quite a while after her husband. The 1870 Clackamas County census lists her living next to C.F. Howard, another nephew, in Beaver Creek, Oregon. Margaret died at Buena Vista, Oregon in 1886, and is buried next to her husband in the Carus Cemetery."
