    He was born at the Stockton Ranch in Bishop, owned by his great uncle,
Charles Alfred Stockton.  His father and grandfather (Nelson) ran the ranch for
Charles.  About 1929 the Los Angeles Water Company bought out many ranches in
that area. Having spent the first 10 years of his life in the Sierra Nevada
mountains where his father had the pack station at Virginia Lakes, he was very
knowlegeable in the ways of the outdoors.
