John STANTON

     Will dated 12 NOV 1756; a marble stone on Stanton farm in Newport states he
died on 22 JAN 1762 at age of 89. The stone also shows the death dates of both
wives. It had been erected by a gt grandson in 1841
     John was married 1st to Elizabeth Clarke, d/o Latham Clarke and Hannah
Wilbur, in Portsmouth, RI on 9 FEB 1698/99 by Gov Samuel Cranston.  She had 12
children.  He m2nd Susannah Lamphere abt 1634. She had 13 children
     John was a freeman in 1696. He deeded all interest in 10 acres of land in
Newport, that his brother Robert had inherited from their grandfather, John
Harndell, on 20 JUN 1699. From his father, he inherited the farm on Newport
Neck "only on condition that John does not molest his brother Benjamin in his
claim on 7 acres bequeathed to Benjamin by his grandfather John Harndell;
should John so molest, then the land on Newport Neck is to go to Benjamin."  A
merchant, John inherited 307 acres in Narragansett country, that had been
purchased by his father and George Gardner, and moved there in 1733.
