DR. T.C. STOCKTON, 1911, PG 260; engaged in mercantile business several years.
    When Mexican War began, he was Superintendent of Indiana State Prison.
    Volunteered and became Capt of Indiana volunteer co. With Scott's army. At
    close of war, went to California and joined his brother, George at San Jose.
    Member of first (provisional) legislature 1849. Lt. Gov. of CA, served out

GOVERNORS OF CALIFORNIA, HOWARD BRETT MELENDEZ, 1965 920.0794 m519; "CALENDAR
    OF EVENTS; 28 FEB 1849 arrived in San Francisco aboard the California; 13 NOV
    1849 elected 1st CA Lt. Gov.; 9 JAN 1851 succeeded Peter Burnett as Governor;
    12 JAN 1852 had duel with A. C. Russell, editor of Picayune, wounded him only;
    OCT 1856 arrested but acquited of fraud; 30 MAR 1866 died of apolexy brought
    on by alcoholism. 48 years old. (says born into destitute family ??? father
    was a doctor)
Cliff Neilson, 7/93; note under John's uncle, George Stockton says "in Sept.
    1810, George Stockton registered his loan of named household goods to his
    sister Margaret, because ".. her husband, John McDougal has eloped from his
    wife." John left his household and kitchen furniture under a levy by the
    Marshall of Ohio who then sold them, leaving Margaret and her children in need
    of items for her immediate care and that of her children"  John must have
    returned if there were children born after 1810; OR we have inccorect dates.
