Arrived in Oregon 1853. Grant Co. 1870 Census shows born in N.Y. He was the Long Creek Sheriff. Early 1850's he was 7 years old., born in Shelby Co., Illinois. 1989: From Kent Haldorson, 4860 SW Laurelwood Dr., Portland, OR 97225 "Thomas was born November 20, 1849 in Shelby County, Illinois. He came with his family to Oregon in the early 1850's. Early in his childhood, Thomas fell off of a wagon wheel he was playing on and broke his jaw. The jaw healed improperly, resulting in a slight protrusion. In later years, Thomas grew a moustache to cover his protruding jaw. Thomas marttri3e4d Rebecca Long, who was born in January of 1855 near molalla in Clackamas County, Oregon. She was the daughter of James and W. Zenith Long. After their marriage, Thomas and Rebecca settled pm the :Little Butter Creek near Happner in Morrow County. During this period, "the Indians were not very friendly. When there was danger of an uprising, the men would take their families to Heppner by Wagon where a fort was established. The women and children would stay there until the men had made peace with the Indians. Olive, (Thomas and Rebecca's) oldest daughter, could remember the family leaving the house and sleeping in the rye grass many times. They had one friend among the Indians. His name was 'Old Blind Jim". He would get word to the Howards when he heard the Indians talking about burning the ranch houses in the area. Fortunately the Howard home was never burned. In 1884 the Howards move their four children into Heppner where Thomas bought part of a general merchandizing store from A.P. Sloan. A few years later he bought out Sloan 's share of the business, and was sole owner of The First Grocery on Main Street. Morrow County was created in 1885, and Governor Moody appointed Thomas County Assessor. Thomas was elected sheriff in 1886 and reelected in 1888. As Assessor, he would ride around the county on horseback collecting taxes. "He was a delegate to the (Republican) County Conventions of 1892 and 1894 the league of 1895, and the State Convention of 1896." The Howards never forgot old friends. "When 'Old Blind Jim' and his Indians would come to the Howard Home they were given the finest meal that could be prepared [,] and Thomas would take them to the store and fill their packs with food staples." In 1989, Thomas bought a stock ranch 15 miles above Heppner. During the summer, Wayne would operate the ranch while Sister Mary, Lizzie, and Ida cooked for the ranch hands. On June 14, 1903, a devasting flood hit Heppner, nearly destroying the town. Hundreds were killed including Thomas, Rebecca, Mary, Nellie and Mabel. Wayne, L9izzie, and Ida were at the ranch on high ground and were spared., 22 May 1978: Sent request to Delores Bruns, County Clerk, Shelbyville, Illinois. Please do search on Thomas Richey Howard.
