William was a blacksmith with property valued at $500.00

He was a farmer age 57 with real estate valued at $800.00. Also listed were: Tabitha age 19, keeping house, Valentine 14, Sophia 10, William 6 and Martha age 3 at home

DEATH OF VALENTINE ROWLES OF WOODLAND - Valentine Rowles, a highly respected citizen of Mineral Spring, died about three o'clock Sunday morning December 30th, 1923, in the Punxsutawney hospital.  Mr. Rowles was aged 66 years, nine months and 19 days.  His parents were Mr. and Mrs. William Rowles.  He was born at Sanborn but resided in Woodland for a number of years.  He was a pensioner of H. and W. Refractories Company for long and faithful service rendered.  Surviving him are his wife and the following children:  Mrs. Lillly Johnson, of Punxsutawney; Mrs. Alice Kling of Tyrone; Mrs. Ethel Patton, of Detroit, Mich.; Elmer of Bigler and Mrs. Bessie Peters, Lloyd, William, Charles, Scott, George, Walton and Jeanette, of Mineral Spring.  Three brothers and two sisters also survive.  Funeral services will be held at his late home in Mineral Spring on Wednesday afternoon, with burial in Bradford cemetery.  Mr. Rowles had been ill for more than two years and met his death in a fall from a second story window at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Thompson, by a former marriage.  A hard and steady worker, Mr. Rowles earned the respect and esteem of his fellow men.  He was a stable boss at the H.W. Co. works at Woodland for a long term of years.

WOODLAND - WIlliam (Mack) Rowles, well known resident of Woodland, died at his home May 20, 1941 at the age of 76 years.  He was born at Sanborn on October 10, 1864.  An employe of the Harbison-Walker Refractories  Company until his retirement a few years ago.  He was a cheerful and friendly neighbor and friend.  He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Pritchard at the M.E. Church at Woodland on the 27th day of December 1890.  Surviving are his widow and the following sons:  Arthur of Ohio; Chancie and Andrew of Woodland.  A foster daughter, Margaret Bumbgarner of Clearfield also survives.  A daughter, Dorothy, preceded him in death in 1922.  There are 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and a sister, Martha, also surviving.  Funeral services were held from the home of his son, Andrew Rowles on May 23 at 2 o'clock with Rev. J.C. Rupp officiating.  Interment was made in Bradford Cemetery.

Celebrate Golden Wedding Day - WOODLAND - 1941 marks the beginning of the 51st year of married life for Mr. and Mrs. Mack Rowles of Woodland, shown above.  They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, Friday, December 27, at their home.  The Rowles are life-long residents of this area.  Mr. Rowles having been born at Sanborn in 1864.  Mrs. Rowles in 1873 at Turtle Creek.  Both are enjoying good health.  Four children were born to this union:  Arthur of Ohio; Chancie of Woodland; Andrew of Woodland; and Dorothy, deceased.  There are also 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  Present at the celebration were:  Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Rowles and family, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cornely of Clearfield; Mr. and Mrs. Wilbert Wisor of Glen Campbell; Mrs. Alice Knapper of Philipsburg; Joseph Knapper and family; Mr. and Mrs. Scott Rowles and daughter of Woodland; Mr. and Mrs. Eli Pritchard and family of Clearfield; and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Baumgarner and family, also of Clearfield.

The ancestry of Allen Rowles has not been proven.  He is probably the Allen Rowls who appeared in the 1870 census in the household of Joel and Sarah (Wisor) Wolstencroft in Boggs Township August 16, 1870 at age 1/12.  His mother Mary probably died when he was born.  Sarah Wisor was Mary's sister.
