Notes:
Dennis Hoban was of Irish descent. He died in 1899, a few months before Louise was born. The "Hoban boy" was killed while working on a bridge between Buffalo NY and Canada (but not the Peace Bridge, since it was built in 1927). Ref: Letter from Louise Hoban Savage on visit to Buffalo, 9-14-53. LHS met one of the Hoban families in Buffalo in 1953. She talked to a lady whose grandfather's name was Dennis Hoban and whose mother was Katherine. As LHS relates what she heard, "There were four Hoban brothers who came to Buffalo from Canada to help erect the bridge in the early 1900's. One was killed -- apparently he was my father One brother went to Australia and one went to Youngtown, Ohio. ... She is the daughter of one of these 4 brothers. She was brought up in a Catholic convent in Canada. They were all Catholics." ...Miss Agnes Hoban "said the Hobans came from Ireland to Canada to Detroit to Buffalo when the bridges were being built in the 1890's. She's positive it is the right family." (Reference: Letter from LHS on visit to Buffalo, 9-11-53). LHS said they "had looked at microfilm records. We did find a record of Dennis Hoban as of 1895 -- living in Buffalo at the time on Vermont St. He was listed as an engraver, which is what Winifred Davidson says he was, although my birth certificate shows him as a Teamster. (Reference: Letter from LHS on visit to Buffalo, 9-16-53). Dennis was born in Canada, according to birth certificate of his first born, John Gerald Hoban. He was born in Michigan, according to birth certificate of LHS. Most likely, he was born in Canada and grew up in Michigan.
Notes:
Kate Chippa's given name may have been Katerina Chippa. She was of Italian ancestry. Her husband Dennis Hoban died 4 or 5 months before the birth of Louise. (Reference: Letter from Louise H. Savage to NY State Dept of Health, 12-13-44.) Winifred Hatch, later Winifred Davidson, lived on Seneca St. in Buffalo near the apartment house on that street in which lived the mother of LHS. The mother asked Winifred to take the child, who was about 2 weeks old, and bring her up as her own. Not then financially able to support the child, Winifred placed her in the Lotus Home in Buffalo, an institute for orphans conducted by members of the Buffalo branch of the Theosophical Society, located at the corner of Delaware and Kenmore Avenues in Buffalo. Winifred had become a member of the TS in 1898. (Ref: Affidavit of Winifred Davidson, 4-26-62.) Kate's birthplace was Canada, she was age 31, and she was living at 176 Seneca St. in Buffalo, according to LHS's birth certificate (which she got from the Buffalo Dept of Health in Nov. 1942).
