Charles William SAVAGE
Charles William Savage came to Liverpool from Newbury on May 29, 1859; at the time there was a strike that lasted for 17 weeks. He married Frances Milton Timms a year later in January 1860. He worked as a cabinetmaker (foreman). He was also a wood carver and artist, creating murals and Christmas cards. (Reference: his daughter Lucy Savage's extracts from "Family Record" written by Charles William Savage, dated at Commencement, June 1st, 1849; update dated 1880.) Source for christening date and place: IGI, from Extracted birth/ christening records of Lower Meeting House -- Independent, Newbury, Berkshire, England. In Liverpool they lived at 31 Huskisson Street.
Frances Milton Timms was a teacher in a Wesleyan school in England. (Reference: Louise H. Savage, notes from trip to England in 1974.) Reference for christening date: San Diego LDS Genealogical Library. She was the 3rd child of John Timms. John Milton: The family is supposed to be descended from poet John Milton's family. Madeline had heard that out relationship to him was not direct, but a collateral line, being descended through his brother, Christopher Milton. (Reference: Letter from Madeline to us, 1969). John Milton was born in 1608. His sister's sons were Edward and John Philips (Reference: "Heart of Oaks Books," Vol.7, p.15; brief biography of Milton, p.15 ff).
Frances Mary (Polly) Savage died in April 1919 at age 58 (so born in 1860). She was the "eldest sister of H.M. Savage" according to Madeline. According to Aunt Lucy's journal, Polly and husband William R. Willis lived for many years in Bassenthwaite, Cumberland, England (p. 107). Her son Robert Christian Willis lived in Hazel Gill in Cumberland (p.59). Polly is interred at Welton Churchyard in Hazel Gill. Polly was a teacher, who married Robert Willis, according to Louise H. Savage, notes from trip to England in 1974 (from visit with Elsie Benjamin). Also gave Polly's birthdate.
Harry Milton Savage married Florence Rose Hudson on August 6, 1887, and a reception was held at their home at 17 Great George Square in Liverpool. The family immigrated to the U.S. in December 1900. They landed at New York, took the train cross country via Chicago, and arrived at Point Loma on December 28, 1900. Harry worked as an accountant in Liverpool, being the executive cashier at the Goodyear Shipping Co. One factor in coming to California was the climate. Harry had tuberculosis and had spent some months recuperating in Valencia, Spain, away from the cold and fog of Liverpool. He died of TB only two years later in July 1902. (References: letters from Harry in Spain home to their address in Liverpool; U.S. naturaliza- tion papers of Charles M. Savage; other family notes). Harry worked in the office of a shipbrokers company in Liverpool. He was a good arithmetician, and by 1879(?) he was chief bookkeeper. (Reference: Louise H. Savage, notes from trip to England, 1974.) Harry died on July 17, 1902, of tuberculosis and death certificate said cause of death was phthisis pulmonalis, which was contracted in Liverpool 10 years previously. Many other members of the Point Loma community were interred at Lotus-By-The-Sea cemetery, but Harry was cremated and his ashes scattered at Point Loma in 1902.
Lucy Savage was the family's genealogist. She never married. Date of death: Reference: Madeline's diary, 1953 (opp. pg.July 1): "Auntie Lucy died of a sudden stroke; lived 6 days but did not recover consciousness."
