Major James WALLIS
--A Marriage record has been located in the Caswell County, North Carolina, Marriage Bond list, giving a date of 5 Jul 1826. Two Sargent families lived in Caswell Co. on the 1820 census. --Rufus Carrol Wallis writes in a biography published 1905 that he is: "the son of Allen and Ann (Sargent) Wallis, natives of Minnesota and early pioneers of Missouri. The family for several generations back were builders and people of wealth. Our subject was reared in Missouri, whence the family went when he was four years of age. He came to Oregon in the Fall of 1862..." --Rufus stated various birthplaces for his parents, the least likely of which is that published above - Minnesota. In 1880 Rufus stated his father and mother were from NC and TN, in 1900 he states they are from TN and TN, in 1910 he states they are from TN and MS, respectively. None of these fully correlate with migration patterns if Allen and Ann were married in NC. --Rufus also lists in the 1905 biography "Mr. Wallis has one brother, also one sister, Jane, the wife of William H. Hale, retired, at Goldendale, Washington." No brother was located in Goldendale, but Jane, also known as Jennie or Rachel J., was located. --The biography of Jane's husband WIlliam H. Hale states "He was united in marriage in Randolph County, Missouri, December 7, 1859, to Miss Jennie Wallace, a native of Maury County, Tennessee, and daughter of Allen and Anna Wallace." William and Jane came to WA in 1878. --Jane, listed as Rachel J Hale, is living with William H. Hale's family on the 1860 census in Silver Creek, Randolph, MO. --Several internet pedigrees show a Peter Allen Wallis or Allen Peter Wallis married to an Ann Sargent, however none of these show children Rufus or Jane (or Rachel or Jennie), and these families remain in North Carolina, instead of moving to Tennessee and then Missouri. --No correct family of Allen Wallis, Wallace, Wells, or Wills could be found on the 1850 or 1860 censuses in Knoxville, TN, Maury, TN, or Randolph, MO, or the surrounding areas. Searches for Rufus or Jane or Rachel or Jennie with these surname variations also did not locate the family in 1850 or 1860. --Original research may focus on finding local records for these areas to track the movement of this family, and discover if it is the same family as the Peter Allen Wallis family listed in several sources. --BJ, UGC, Nov 2007
