Immigrated to the U. S. in 1872, three years after his father, 3 brothers and
1 sister had immigrated.  He settled in Adams Township buying 40 acres from his
brother Jacob.  He was a wine maker in Germany, living in the Mosel River
Valley.  He brought with him to the U. S. his five sons, his second wife and
her sister Mary Martz.  Mary married his son Baltus so wis wife and his son's
wife were sisters.  For more information see pages 13-15 of Schwartz history.

a name change from Catherine Martz to Kathleen Marks.  Her obit indicates that
she married Nicolas in 1872.  It also says she is survived by her husband,
Nicolas, a brother, Matthew Marks of Moline, Illinois and five stepsons, John,
Peter, J. P., Casper, all of Ottumwa and Phillip Schwartz of Germany.  (So who
is Baltus)
