We don't know the exact date of Josephs arrival in the New World but it is evidant that he was here and connected to the Charlton family by 1737. In that year the colonies of Maryland and Pennsylvania were involved in a kind of border war. Josephs brother-in-law, Thomas Charlton, was one of the leaders of the Maryland faction. Joseph is also mentioned in the accounts of the conflict and he signed (and possibly wrote) a petition to the govenor of the Maryland colony asking for military aid.Joseph and his friends lost their bid to claim land in Pennsylvania under Maryland charters so they moved west. He and the Charltons settled near present day Hagerstown, MD. in a place called leitersburg. He hear little from him untill he buys property that he called "Perry's Retirement" in 1756(the same year his father James Perry died.) Joseph was very much involved in the patriot cause during the Revolutionary War. Will written in 1777 left bulk of his estate to Episcopal Church.
