-Lewis Bryan represented Johnston County in the House of Commons, 21-Aug-1775. He was commissioned a Captain in the militia of Johnston County on 25-May-1775 -Capt. Lewis Bryan, his uncle Needham, and his Father Col. William Bryan were poisoned and killed by their slave Jenny. Lewis Jr. was born a couple months after his father's death. RESEARCH NOTE: There is another Lewis Bryan, not related, living in Johnson County, NC at the same time. These two families are often confused. Please see the notes for further explanation and research information. Information obtained from Rootsweb member page: Emails to Mike Crandall September 4-9, 1999From Kenneth Barker kennethbarker@email.msn.comI received an email from Elizabeth Kababaker asking me what I knewabout "Ridley Bryan". I replied that Ridley is a daughter of Lewis and(unknown) Bryan. She was excited so I sent that excited reply to everyoneincluding Kenneth Barker. Kenneth disagreed, this is his message.I recently purchased a copy of "The Heritage of Johnston CountyNorth Carolina" The article for your family "Bryans of Mill Creek",article #157, is on pages 161-162 and the article for my family"William and Needham Bryan", article #158, is on pages 162-163.Lewis Bryan, the son of William Bryan, of Johnston County is mentionedin this article, #158, along with a list of his children that are in the courtrecords of May 1782. This court record lists his minor child Lewis Bryan.Ridley Bryan is the daughter of Lewis Bryan (son of Col. WilliamBryan and Elizabeth Smith) and Sarah Hinton of Johnston Co., NorthCarolina. Ridley Bryan was born November 22, 1773 in Johnston Co.,North Carolina. Lewis Bryan and his father Col. William Bryan werepoisoned and killed by one of their slaves in January 1780 and the trial isin the Johnston County North Carolina Court Minutes for November Court1780. Lewis Bryan's children were all minors and guardians were appointedfor his orphaned children during May 1782 Court in Johnston Co., NorthCarolina. His children that were still alive at that time were all named in thiscourt proceeding, including Ridley.Ridley Bryan married Solomon Thomas on February 25, 1792 inJohnston Co., North Carolina (Marriages of Johnston County, NorthCarolina 1762 - 1868, p. 117). The bondsman for this marriage was IsaacHinton the brother of Sarah Hinton.I have land deeds which link Sarah Hinton, wife of Lewis Bryan anddaughter of William Hinton of Johnston County, to Lewis Bryan ofBuncombe Co., North Carolina who is definitely my 3rd great-grandfather.I also have William Hinton's will which links Sarah Hinton to the land thatshe deeded, on March 9, 1782, to her son Lewis Bryan. Lewis Bryan ofBuncombe Co. later sold the land, on Mar. 12, 1802, that his mother deededto him for to John Russell of Johnston County for $1000.These two Bryan families of Johnston Co., North Carolina are twoseparate families. Col. William Bryan and Elizabeth Smith had a son LewisBryan, also mentioned in the will of William Bryan written January 12,1780 and probated February 1780 in Johnston Co., and this Lewis Bryanalso had a son Lewis Bryan that moved to Buncombe Co., North Carolina.Your John Bryan of Johnston Co.also had a son named Lewis Bryan. Thebig problem here is that your Lewis Bryan never had a son by the name ofLewis Bryan.Hope this clears up this situation. I have all the documents for myfamily line. The problem here is that Darl Hood tried to link two LewisBryan's together because of their name without any documentary evidenceto do so. If he had read the very next article in the "Heritage of Johnston Co,North Carolina", after the "Bryan's of Mill Creek", he would have discoveredthe other two Lewis Bryan's of Johnston Co. You can not link people whendoing genealogy purely by name, as so many people have done, you needgood documentary evidence to doThere were two Lewis Bryan's born in Johnston Co., North Carolinajust a few years apart, 16 years in fact. The first was a Lewis Bryan bornNovember 24, 1729 who was the son of John Bryan and Alice Macque, thisis your wife's ancestor. This Lewis Bryan is mentioned in his father's, JohnBryan, nuncupative will dictated in Craven Co., North Carolina on October31, 1741. This Lewis Bryan's wife is unknown but his children wereWilliam, John, Asa, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Sylvia and Mary. This LewisBryan family also lived in the Mill Creek area of Johnston County. The second Lewis Bryan in Johnston Co., North Carolina was bornNovember 04, 1745 in Johnston Co. and is the son of Col. William Bryanand Elizabeth Smith. This Lewis Bryan is mentioned in his father's, WilliamBryan, will dated January 12, 1780 and probated in February court 1780 inJohnston C o. This Bryan family lived in the area that is now Smithfield,Johnston Co., N. C. Col. William Bryan of Smithfield, Johnston Co. wasvery active in the American Revolution and is D.A.R Col. William Bryan'sdescendants and ancestors are very well known and are very well documented. This is the Lewis Bryan, son of Col. William Bryan, that married SarahHinton on October 26, 1769 in Johnston Co., North Carolina (Marriages ofJohnston County, North Carolina 1762 - 1868, p. 20). The bondsman for thismarriage was Samuel Smith, Jr., a relative of Lewis Bryan's mother ElizabethSmith. The children named in the May 1782 court proceedings in JohnstonCo. to determine guardianship after Lewis Bryan's untimely death were:Edney, Ridley (misspelled Redley), Larry and Lewis. Lewis and Sarah HintonBryan also had a son William (1776-1777) who died before his father's deathin 1780. Lewis Bryan, Jr., son of Lewis and Sarah Hinton Bryan, was bornApril 4, 1780 in Johnston Co., just a couple of months after his father's death.Lewis Bryan, Jr. died October 01, 1851 in Madison Co., North Carolina. These birth and death dates are from his tombstone in the Bryan Cemetery onFisher Lane, near Walnut Creek, Madison Co., North Carolina. Lewis Bryan,Jr. Married Judith Peek on April 18, 1809 in Buncombe Co., North Carolina. All Lewis Bryan, Jr. (b. 1780) and Judith Peek's 12 children in Buncombe Co.,N. C. are known, along with their exact dates of birth and the names of all theirspouses. These are my ancestors and relatives and not yours. As you shouldbe able to see here, we are dealing with two totally different Bryan families andtwo totally different Lewis Bryan's born in the early 1700's.John Bryan the immigrant in the mid 1600's did not live in Isle of WightCo., Virginia. John Bryan patented land in Nansemond Co., Virginia on 15Oct. 1652 (Virginia Patent Book No. 3, page 115). Nansemond Co., Virginiais now the City of Sulffolk Co. All of John Bryan's land patents up to 1694are in Nansemond Co., Virginia. There is no real evidence that John Bryanever lived in Isle of Wight Co., Virginia, he lived in the Upper Parish ofNansemond Co. near the border of Nansemond and Isle of Wight Counties.Nansemond Co. was never a part of Isle of Wight County. The only Bryanknown to have lived in Isle of Wight Co. at that time was James Bryan. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- North Carolina Marriage Bonds 1741-1868Bride: Sarah HintonGroom: Lewis BryanBond Date: 26 October 1769County: JohnstonRecord: 01 036Bondsman: Samuel SmithWitness: John RandBond #: 000067197Lewis Bryan, Jr. also received land from his mother, Sarah Hinton:Mar. 9, 1782 Sarah Bryan of JoCo to Lewis Bryan for NL & Aff. to son, all that land on Marks Creek which came to her by will of William Hinton her father...Witness: Hardy Bryan, Saml Williams (Johnston County Deed Book L-1, page 186)Mar.12, 1802 Lewis Bryan of Buncombe Co to John Russell of JoCo for $1,000, 260 acres in JoCo, on NS Neuse River on Marks Creek...being all that tract of land deeded to me by my Mother then Sarah Bryan & left to her by her father William Hinton, decd. in his LW & T...Wit: Hardy Bryan, Saml Lee, Jr., R. She and her sister, Esther, received this land on Marks Creek through a default of their brother, Demcy Hinton, who was originally deeded this land.Sarah's husband, Lewis Bryan, died as a result of being poisoned by a slave named, Jenny---she also caused the deaths of Lewis's father, Col. William Bryan and Needham Bryan, his uncle. After Lewis's death, Sarah married, Edward Blurton and together they moved to Buncombe Co., NC (now Madison Co.) along with Lewis, Jr. and his brother, Larry. Lewis Bryan, Jr. & Judith Peek are my 4th great-grandparents. There is alot of erroneous information out there on this particular line of Bryan's (not Bryant). These Bryan's migrated from Nansemond and Isle of Wight, Virginia to Johnston and Bertie Counties in North Carolina, then to Western North Carolina.
Research notes and deed proving relationship between Lewis Bryan, Sarah Hinton, and William Hinton in notes Sarah Bryan re-married a Mr. Edward Blurton after Lewis Bryan's death in 1782. They moved to Madison county, taking the two sons of Lewis Bryan with them. Later, Blurton moved to Missouri, settling near St. Louis. Supposed daughter of Maj. John Hinton, however the following email gives evidence to the contrary, retrieved from http://www.sallysfamilyplace.com/Rayner/bryanl.htm e-mail 6/8/06Sally, I am a descendant of Capt. The ancestry beyond Lewis Bryan Jr. has been highly debated and researched, with various results. Several major publicaitons have printed erroneous information. Research notes are provided where they seem to clarify relationships. We have carefully examined the available information, although further research may provide additional answers. - UGC 10/07 Mar. 9, 1782 Sarah Bryan of JoCo to Lewis Bryan for NL & Aff. to son, all that land on Marks Creek which came to her by will of William Hinton her father...Wit: Hardy Bryan Saml Williams.
