John HINTON
A man of prominence, wealth, and had widely-spread connections, there fore, he was traditionally called Colonel. Info from St Marys Parish. He was the youngest son came to the Colony of North Carolina, about 1720. He was the younger son of Sir John HINTON, M.D. and his wife, Elizabeth DILKE, member of the notable Bershire and Wiltonshire family which had intermarried with the Baronial house of Palmer in Sussex. This John Hinton, the elder, of Chowan precinct, was a "man of prominence, wealth and widely spread connections", and traditionally called "Colonel". Just how he acquired this military title is not known. On April 4, 1722, he was granted 350 acres of land on Bennet's Creek in Chowan and later acquired a large landed estate. He married Joan MAGLIN, in about 1670 Wilshire, England--LDS#W9H3-CD and secondly, married Mary HARDY, daughter of John HARDY and Rebecca ____, and grand-daughter of Captain John HARDY,born in England. In Colonel John Hinton's Will, probated the 25th April, 1732, he mentioned his wife, Mary, his well beloved son, Hardy, and well beloved brother, William Hinton, who was the overseer and trustee for his four sons. @ Came to the colony of NC before 1710 w/ his brother William and William's wife, Elizabeth. In 1716 he purchased 126 acres on south side of Bennett's Creek.
She married Colonel John HINTON. In Vol. I, of Colonial Reports of North Carolina is reference to William HINTON with others from Barbadoes making exploration of the coast of North Carolina and mentioning the Albernarle section. This was in August, 1660, and although we cannot determine his settlement there, we find in 1730 in Chowan (now Gates), Col. John HINTON, a man of prominence, wealth and widely spread connection with many of the most influential families in the colony. Named in his will are his children in order, was: Ann Alston HINTON, Mary HINTON, Judah HINTON, Rachel HINTON, Rose HINTON, Sarah HINTON, Charity HINTON, Hardy HINTON, John HINTON, William HINTON, Malachia HINTON And his well loved wife Mary (HARDY) HINTON and well beloved brother William HINTON.
