Historical information in notes Marriage: Tennessee Groom page 251Probate: Doniphan County, Kansas #211Lynn Turner's book "Edward Merritt's Descendants" pg 32 "He moved with his brother George to Tennessee, and lived there many years. However, he died in Troy, Kansas(Doniphan County) on 15 April 1866."
Middle name is Hasseltine or Hazeltine Parentage is in question - this is a widely accepted theory for parents, although there are significant problems with the dates. There is no direct evidence, although several other researchers have listed this as the best possibility. Further research is reccomended. Discrepencies listed in notes. These notes come from another researcher on Ancestry World Tree: (1) Both marriages of Robert, first to Molly Tuggle and second to Elizabeth Roberts, were performed by the Rev. William Douglas.(2) I believe that there are substantial errors in the listed children of Robert and Elizabeth Roberts (Robards). I leave all of the children here that I originally listed, however only one child, Dicey can unquestionably be attributed to Robert and Elizabeth. The Douglas Register lists only Dicey.(a) According to Ron CrockettLeonard and Larkin were the sons of a Leonard Carden, Sr. (Spartanburg SC deed book P p. 366-368 Nov. 25 1817 and deed book X 593 p. 549-550 Sept. 1840.) (b) I do not believe that William Thornburgh, Sarah Hazeltine, John B., Rebecca, and Goldman Benton are their children. The first of the supposed children of Robert and Elizabeth Roberts to be born in Wake County NC was William Thornburgh in 1798, however Robert and Elizabeth were listed as living in Louisa County Va. near Goochland in 1804 Something else that troubles me is that Elizabeth would have been 50 and Robert 65 when Goldman Benton was born. Some researchers place a William Carden and Sarah Hunt as the parents of Anselm, John and Goldman Benton. They also mention a Jane Jincey b. 1792 in Stokes County, NC.(3) Robt. and wife, Elizabeth, (Goochland Co. Deed book 19, p209) sell 1/12 part of Robert Carden's (dec'd) land, on Nov 19, 1804. At that time the deed states they were from Louisa Co., Va. Louisa County adjoins Goochland County to the north.
