William MCKAY

                   Born in scotland,23 Oct 1759, at age 15  he probabley emigrated abt 1772-3   with parents.( not named).  This information comes from the Rev War pension records.  I can find no ship records entering  the cArolinas until 1774 in Apr.  The  Mckay s on the boat of the bachelor of Leith who brought children were George Mckay b 1734 age 40 a farmer and tailor from Strathullie Kildonan Sutherland. He brought his wife and child.  Next was james Mckay age 60 from Strathnaver, sutherland  a shoemaker.  he had a wife and child.  Then was William Mckay age 37 from strath halladale, reay , caitihness.  he had a wife and 4 children. Of these four the oldest was a son 8 years old and the youngest was 18 months.  All of these men arrived on the same ship.  I do not believe any are the father. George is not a name noted as being passed down to the families.    James Mckay had a child with him and his wife.  It could be William  was already in america .   There is a William born 11 Sep 1729 in Braodhyth, Rathen, Banff and illeg child of William Mckay and Jean Smith.   I believe he is the same as this William.   He is not found later in the marriage records of that area nor having any children there.  He apparently moved . And his parents stayed together.  Often due to what ever was the accepted religion  in Great Britain , all other marriages outside that religion were considered illegitimate.   Many married in both religions.




      Wiliam  lived in Bladen co when he enlisted for the war.    Later he moved to Rowan co and enlisted there. Then again to Iredell co then to Richmond Co. NC . He married Feb 1787 Nancy Mckay of Richmond co., then moved to Chesterfield co in SC which is just over the border from Richmond Co. NC.   He  is probably there in 1790.  In 1794 he had a son , Samuel. In 1795 he moved to Ohio co VA. At that time it is mentioned that he had 4 children, 3 of their names were given.  That part of Ohio co became tyler co .  In 1802 he had a son John.  There he applied for pension in 17 aug 1833.  Soldier 6 oct 1833.
