NOTES: Historical information in notes Joseph was a styled cooper and carpenter, settled in Watertown and became one of a mining company with Hez Usher of Boston and Jacob Bullard of Watertown, and others, who bought of Christopher Hall the right to all mines and minerals found and to be found on his land near Cold Springs in Groton. This suggests the origin of a tunnel, (shown to Morse) as the work of Spaniards, excavated under a hill near a brook west of Groton, which yields iron pyrites and yellow mica. He settled on the original homestead of 12 acres in Watertown, which he sold Dec 10 1695 (M.D.12.145). He made his will Sep 1 1720, which was proved Nov 41720, providing for his widow Susanna, and giving to his daughter Susanna Smith ?25. to daughter Mehetabel Grout ?50, to be paid them ineight years after his decease, his executor and residuary lagatee.
