In Lower's Patronymica Britannica or Dictionary of the Family Names of the United Kingdom, giving the origin and definition of family names, is the following: 'How, Howe, Howes. In the South a small round hill; in the North, a hollow place or plain. The mediaeval form is At How, generally synonymous with hill. A-Sax Hou, a mountain,' page 164." Most of the Howes in America today are descendants of JOHN of Sudbury and Marlborough, Abraham of Roxbury, ABRAHAM of Watertown and Marlborough, Edward of Lynn and James of Roxbury and Ipswich; all of whom were in Massachusetts soon after the arrival of Governor John Winthrop in 1630. All of them were Englishmen and Puritans. None of the five emigrant ancestors were related to one-another, except that Abraham of Roxbury and James of Roxbury and Ipswich were brothers. Nothing is known about circumstances of sailing except that Edward of Lynn came over in the Truelove in 1635. Besides the five main lines above mentioned, the work contains an appendix of fragmentary lines not yet connected. http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~historyofMarlborough/geniahowe.htm#ABRAHAM DESCENDANTS of ABRAHAM HOWE In the year 1660 the name of Abraham Howe appears among the proprietors of the town. June 3, 1749 (Cont.....) http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~historyofMarlborough/familyabrahmhowe.htm A GENEALOGICAL DICTIONARY of THE FIRST SETTLERS OF NEW ENGLAND, SHOWING THREE GENERATIONS OF THOSE WHO CAME BEFORE MAY, 1692 ON THE BASIS OF FARMER'S REGISTER. BY JAMES SAVAGE, published 1860 (parts are questionable/BW) The below is information from various records Abraham Howe, was in Marlborough as early as 1657 as records show. In 1660 he shows as being one of the proprietors of the town. He probably came from Roxbury, Masachusetts. He may have removed to Watertown when difficulty with Indians arose, for his second and third child are recorded as being born in Watertown. His house was located near where the schoolhouse number two was located (see 1803 map). Abraham Howe House one of the most beautifully located in Marlborough. It was in 1660 when Abraham Howe who was settled in Watertown moved to Marlborough where he established the Howe Tavern. He married Hannah Ward, daughter of William and they had eleven children among whom was Abraham Jr. who married 1695, Mary Howe, and who with Col. Thomas Howe, the Miles Standish of Marlborough at that time when the Indians burned our Meeting house and so much property, marched in 1704 to the Lancaster Relief where Abraham was killed with Benjemin Hutchins at the time of that engagement. His brother Joseph Howe, who married in 1688 Dorothy Martin, became a large land holder in Marlborough and other places, and owned the grist mill in Feltonville before 1700, probably the first mill erected there. Among their children was Joseph 2nd who married Zeruiah Howe, daughter of Capt. Daniel and Elizabeth (Kerley) Howe, and at her death married Ruth Brigham, daughter of Jonathan and Mary Brigham. It was Joseph 2nd who built the above house in 1700 which somewhere near 1825 was enlarged and again remodeled in 1895. A skin parchment deed signed by Great James and John Woomscon, Indian Chiefs, is the only recorded deed of the home place. Among Joseph's children was Thaddeus who married Levinah Brigham, daughter of Joseph and Comfort [Bigelow] Brigham. [At her death he married Prudence Holman of Bolton.] Among his children was William Howe who married Elizabeth, daughter of John and Grace (Newton) Stowe. Their son Willliam Loring Howe married Persis Sawyer of Berlin. They were the parents of William Nelson Howe, a pleasant old gentleman who smilingly exclaimed, "They didn't put my name down in the book published 50 years ago (referring to Hudson's book)" And then he told stories of the days of the old Indians when his Farm no doubt was one of their burial places as his father, William. L., who owned a considerable portion of their Planting Field had found quantities of beads and arrow heads which no doubt had been buried with these dusky natives. William Nelson Howe married 1850 Abbie D. Witt, daughter of Dwight Witt and Abigail Estabrook Witt. At her death he married Elizabeth Wilkins daughter of Stephen and Relief Whitcomb Wilkins, and here on this old Homestead was his life peacefully lived and ended. His body rests in Rock Lawn Cemetery where his parents were buried. His son, our respected townsman Elmer D. Howe, succeeded to the estate and still resides here with his wife Leonora M. [Bemis] and their three children, William Llewellyn. [married Esther M. Walker,] Leroy Martin, Elizabeth Lavinia. Source: Ella Bigelows Book Daniel Howe, son of Abraham and Hannah (Ward) Howe, was a large land owner in Marlborough, Lancaster and that part of Marlborough which became Westborough. His property was inventoried at 1,264 pounds and was administered by his wife. Joseph Howe, son of Abraham and Hannah (Ward) Howe, was also a large land owner in Marlborough, Lancaster and Watertwon. He owned a gristmill at Feltonville, now Hudson, before 1700. His estate was inventoried at 1,442 pounds. Joseph Howe Jr., son of Joseph and Dorothy (Martin) Howe, was a large land owner in New Marlborough which is in the Berkshires. His will is dated July 16, 1770 and was proved on March 14, 1775; it mentions his wife Ruth, sons Joseph, Thaddeus, Phinehas and Artemus, daughters Zerviah, Dina and Betty. It also mentions his grandchildren of daughter Dorothy. Joseph Howe III, son of Joseph and Grace (Rice) Howe, bought, in 1777, from Reverand Mr. Smith a negroe servant, whose name was Dill Oxford, for the sum of 66 pounds. The Constitution of 1780 made all such persons free. Miss Dill, from choice, remained with the family until the day of her death. She was highly esteemed in the family and neighborhood. Her mode of dress was unuseal for the times, she wore a skirt and petticoat like a female and a coat after the fashion of a man; this was her normal and holiday appearance. There is no record her death in the vital records of Marlborough, nor in the inscriptions of the five cemeteries. Adonijah Howe, son of Abraham and Rachel (Rice) Howe, marched from Princeton as lieutenant at the Lexington Alarm in Capt. Boaz Moore's Company. He died in Princeton. Samuel Howe, son of Joseph and Grace (Rice) Howe, move to Vermont. He was placed on the pension roll of Essex County, Vermont in 1832 for service as private in the Massachusetts militia. He died in Guildhall, Vermont. Artemas Howe, son of Joseph and Ruth (Brigham) Howe, enlisted 1775 in Captain Daniel Howe's Company, Colonel Samuel Holden Parsons' 10th regiment. http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~historyofMarlborough/familyabrahmhowe.htm According to Daniel Wait Howe, "Howe Genealogies" (New England Historical Genealogical Society 1929), "[t]he same difficulty is found in tracing the ancestry and relationship of this branch of the Howe family, that is found in endeavoring the trace the origin of some other Howes in this country. "It is not known that this Abraham How was related to any of his contemporaries of the name in this country, nor has anything been discovered indicating the name or origin of his father. It is not known when nor where he came from to this country; there is a tradition among some of his descendents, that he came from Devonshire, England. Of this we have no proof. "The first mention of this Abraham How in this country, seems to be found on the town records of Watertown, Mass., where the marriage of Abraham How to Hannah Ward, daughter of William and Elizabeth Ward, occurred 26 March 1657. He probably lived there until 1661, when he moved to Marlborough, where his name appeared among the Proprietors of Marlborough as early as 1660, and he participated in the first division of lands in that town, and there he passed the remainder of his life. The only hint that we have ever found, that he had any relatives in this country, is in his Will, where he mentions John Barns senr. as 'my loving kinsman,' but it gives us no light as to what degree of kinship it might be. He seems to have been one of the prominent citizens of the town, as in 1694, he kept the Inn at which the Commissioners of Massachusetts Colony lodged the first night of their journey on their way to treat with the Mohawks. "In 1664, he was one of the petitioners to the General Court, to appoint a committee with full power to settle the differences that the town had gotten into over their internal affairs, and was active in the defense of the town against the Indians in Oct. 1675. Although Abraham and John How both settled in Marlborough, and were near neighbors, they were not related to each other so far as is known; there have been many intermarriages between their descendents, and in this way the two families have become closely allied. Apparently he was a well to do citizen, as is shown by his Will. He died 30 Jan. 1695. His widow died 3 Nov. 1717, aged 78 years." ANCESTRY: The LDS Ancestral File indicates that Abraham How's father is John Howe, b. 1616 at Hadnell, Shropshire, England, d. 28 May 1680, Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts, and married in 1640 to Mary, b. 1618 in England and d. bef. 9 Sep 1698 in Marlborough, Middlesex, Massachusetts. However, this may be doubted as John would have been 16 and Mary would have been 14 had Abraham been This is where Art Howe's database stops. http://members.tripod.com/~arthowe/g0000033.html#I87 The number of those who bear the name of How or Howe in American is very great; yet they may, for the most part, be traced to James and Abraham Howe (perhaps brothers) of Roxbury, admitted freemen in 1637-38; to Edward and Abraham Howe of Watertown; to Daniel and Edward Howe of Lynn; and to John Howe, who was in Sudbury as early as 1638, and who died in Marlborough in 1687. Descendants lived in New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and elsewhere.

She was one of fourteen children of that family. She married Abraham Howe of Marlborough, Ma. May 6, 1657. She d Nov 3, 1717 aged 78 and he d June 30, 1695 both in Marlborough. They settled near Number 2 school house in Marlborough, Ma. which was located near the South Meeting House on what is now known as Pleasant St. They had eleven children there. Her father,William Ward Sr, built a house prior to 1670 near where is now the Soldiers Monument on West Main St in Marlborough. He was the first Deacon of the first Religious society organized here with about 225 people by the year 1675. His son Samuel had the house when it was designated as Garrison No 15. It was this place that about 25 people fled to when the first church was burned down by Indians in 1676. William had a grandson named Artemus Ward who was the first Commander in Chief of all forces raised by the Colony and had charge of the troops in Cambridge till he was superseded by General George Washington. Elizabeth Ward, Hannah's mother, is buried at the Springhill Burial Ground on Spring Hill Ave. in Marlborough. He husband, William has a memorial there also, however he may be buried in Shrewsbury where he had removed to or in Sudbury where he had come from. The William Ward house was was burned twice by raiding Indians and each time was rebuilt until it became a large gable ended two story Colonial, with a center chimney and entrance with single light surrounds. It eventually passed on to the hands of Bonney Hayden, for which the street it is on is named "Hayden St.". The only thing the remains of the Wards is a park in Marlborough aptly named "Ward Park" dedicated to Artemus Ward. My sources.. DANIEL2 HOWE (Abraham), is supposed to have been born in Watertown, Mass., about 1658; he married 6 Oct. 1686, ELIZABETH KERLEY, daughter of Capt. Henry and Elizabeth (White) Kerley. They lived in Marlborough, where he became one of the leading citizens of the town. It is related of him, that on the 16th day of August 1707, while at work with Jonathan Wilder, in a meadow in the westerly part of the town, known as Milham, some two miles or more from his home, they were surprised by a party of Indians, (thirteen in number) who took them captive, and bound them with birch withes. Taking Wilder with them, they left Howe with one Indian to guard him, while they went farther on, intending to take Howe with them on their return. Howe managed to work his hands free, and watching his chance, he seized the Indians gun, before the savage was aware of what he was doing, whereupon the Indian fled. Howe immediately returned to his home and gave the alarm. The townspeople speedily raised about twenty men, and went in pursuit of the savages. Following their trail, they caught up with them in that part of Lancaster, now Sterling, where a fight ensued, in which several of the Indians were killed. (Wilder the captive was killed by the savages as soon as the attack was made;) the remainder of the Indians fled leaving their packs on the ground. The party then returned to Marlborough.
