Extensive historical information and sources included in notes The Howe Genealogies by Daniel Wait Howe list Nahum Ward as the son of William Ward and Hannah Brigham. There is more detail in the book. Daniel Howe, Martha's father, born about 1658, married Elizabeth Kerley (not Kerby), daughter of Capt. Henry and Elisabeth (White) Kerley on 6 October 1686. Daniel is the first of 10 children of Abraham How of Marlborough and Watertown, MA and Hannah Ward, daughter of William and Elizabeth Ward, married on 26 March 1657 in Watertown. They moved to Marlborough in 1661. His will is on record and listed in the Howe Genealogies. Abraham How may have come from Devonshire, England. The Howe Genealogies, Boston 1929, are in two volumes. History of Shrewsbury http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/2771/jolley.html#index Nahum Ward, who bought the Newtons' share of Haynes' Farm, though not one of the twenty-three owners in 1717, was one of the first comers here and his purchase, a large tract, lay on the south side of the road opposite the common, extending thence both easterly and westerly. His great-grandson, author of a history of Shrewsbury, supposes he was here before 1718, and living near the Jonas Stone house (now owned by Mr. Frederick Stone, of Boston), but William Taylor at that time owned the land where that house stands, and Mr. Ward owned no land nearer than the south side of the Great Road. Mr. Ward was colonel of a militia regiment in the Provincial Line, and chairman of the first and member of many subsequent Boards of Selectmen; many times representative to the General Court, and a justice of the Worcester County Court of Common Pleas, 1745-62. He was admitted to the Worcester bar in 1731, but I have not found a case of his acting as counsel except in the Malden suit elsewhere mentioned. He was father of General Artemas Ward and ancestor of all who ever bore the Ward name in Shrewsbury. William Ward, who came from York, England, to Sudbury, about 1640, was his grandfather.END Sources: Title: Robert Roy's Genealogical FilesPublication: http://www.theroyfamily.com/gen/roy/index.htmRepository: Media: Electronic Title: W.
