Alex Cromarty 1990 DEATH: 1841 Census shows Alexander living age 75, but on the 14 May 1846 marriage of his son, William Cromarty to Margaret Gutcher, Alexander Cromarty is listed as deceased. NOTE MARRIAGE: Wittnesses to Alexander Cromarty and his wife Margaret Stewart were William Cromarty and James Laughton RESIDENCE: Their children were born on the farm of Lyths, or Lythes in the North Parish (St. Peters) 1821 census living at South Cara which was a farm farther North than Lyths 1841 census Farmer in Grimness which is where the farm of South Cara is situated. Alexander is recorded as being 75 years of age. NOTE: The heir to the farm was usually, first the oldest son and second in line would be the next oldest son if the first declined or died or didn't have a son to pass it on to. NOTE: The dwellings were not privatly owned such as South Cara. They were owned by the Marquis of Zetland or the Earl of Zetland. Alexander Cromarty would have been a tenant. This was observed from looking at the valluation Rolls for the County of Orkney. All the folk are referred to as tenants and the proprietor as the Earl.

Alex Cromarty 1990 DEATH: When Jean Cromarty, Margaret's daughter, married in February 1833, her mother was listed without comment. One month later, Magnus Cromarty married Margaret Logie on 28 March 1833. This time the mother of Magnus, Margaret Stewart, was described as deceased. At each subsequent marriage of Cromarty children, Margaret Stewart was listed as the mother deceased. Also she did not appear on the 1841 census. Death must have taken place in March 1833. On a tomb stone inscription that was hard to read it says AC loves MS To the Memory of Margeret Stewart Espoused to Alexander Cromarty who departed this life March 6th 1822 aged 51 years

Alex Cromarty CENSUS: for S.Cara 1861 (GS 103889) & 1871 (GS 104069) NOTE RESIDENCE: raised his family at South Cara, South Ronaldsay OCCUPATION: farmer of 25 arces 1n 1851 census and had one laborer NOTE IN REGARD to CENSUS TAKEN: The ages of all adults were rounded down to the nearest 5th year. For Example a person's age between 70 and 74 would be calculated as 70 years of age. Other interesting notes: Magnus, William's older brother must have turned down his right to get South Cara. After all he was raising a family on the Island of Stronsay where his wife was from when he would have become heir to South Cara at the death of his father in 1845. The other interesting note is that William had a twin, John, who had an equal right to William for South Cara.
