Found in Musters & Pay Rolls (W0 12-5752) 45 Ft, for 1844 Thomas Bird appears No. 1401 Sgt in Cape Town. In 1844 discharged 30 November Sgt Thomas Bird on payment of 18.0.0 lbs. He obviously had bought himself out of the service. It also showed that he enlisted on 21 June 1838, indicating that he only served for 6 years althnough he reached the rank of Sgt.
