SOURCE: Marriage certificate shows Thomas Bird as a Sargeant in the 45 Reg. in Cape Town married in the St. George's Church in Cape Town on the 17 June 1844 Found in Musters & Pay Rolls (W0 12-5752) 45 Ft, for 1844 Thomas Bird appears No. 1401 Sgt in Cape Town. In 1844 discharged 30 November Sgt Thomas Bird on payment of 18.0.0 lbs. He obviously had bought himself out of the service. It also showed that he enlisted on 21 June 1838, indicating that he only served for 6 years althnough he reached the rank of Sgt. 1851 Bird Family LIving in Cape of Good Hope, Africa see Census 1861 for Elizabeth below. In the Book, "A Register of the Regiments and Corpts of the British Army it shows the 45th Regement came from Nottinghamshire.
