From the Diary of Joshua Hempstead-p.57

Tuesday 31 July 1716-fair.  We launched our sloop.  She went off well.  Robert
Allyn is committed to the prison for shooting John Pelton in ye right arm and
breast his right arm is cut off near his shoulder to save his life.

This happenned near Groton, Conn. Joshua Hempstead was a lawyer, stone cutter,
quite a man.  He defended Allyn in court and Allyn had to pay Pelton 500 pounds
to pay for his cure and all charges.  He had to pay a 40 pound  fine and 100
pound bond for good behavior till superior court in March.
