He educated himself, as schools were few in Sheboygan Co. WI. where his family settled. He taught in the district school there. He entered the state univer- sity in Madsion, WI. The following year, illness forced him home where he again taught school. In 1852-53, he was a reporter for the Wisconsin Argus. In 1854, he became an editorial writer for the Wisconsin Argus.
