"We don't know anything about Sarah's early life except that she was a small child when the Civil War started.  The fighting was heavy in the area where she and her family lived.  Her father, William H. who fought for the South, was shown as paroled at SAlisbury, North Carolina at the end of the war, but we have no further records of him.  He was deceased by the 1870 Census becasue his wife, Sarah, is shown as a widow in that census. .... Sarah was a midwife and she rode a horse to make her rounds.  Her great-grandson, Gordon Maricle, has a webpage with pictures of the family and also o fht esidesaddle she bougt from "Buffalo Bill".  THe saddle has been resotred and is displayed with a plaque that says: "English Side Saddle, Made by S. G. Gallup Saddle Co., Pueblo, Colorado in 1895.  Purchased in 1896 for $15.00 by Sarah J. Mince from Wm. Cody "Buffalo Bill" at Dexter, Mo. while he was appearing with his Wild West Show.  It had been used by one of the women in the show.  At his request she changed to a western saddle.  Grandmother Mince rode this saddle many hundred miles as a midwife in S.E. Missouri from 1896 to 1917.  Saddle restored in 1970 by Raymon Mince, grandson."      Sarah and William's children had many children of their own and now there are also several more generations of Minces.
