N.Y. GEN AND BIOG. REC/ A;SP 17TH CEN. COLONIAL ANC. Info. from John R. Cain 1114,Peninsula dr. Box 3257 Lake Almanor Pen.,Ca. 96137 One of the signers of the Flushing Remonstrance, 27 Dec 1657 John C. Thorne Says: " The first New England reference to William Thorne is that of his admittance as a freedom to Lynn, Massachusetts on May 2, 1638 having arrived that year in the ship "confidence" from England. He is also shown to have served on a Salem jury on June 29,1641. Shortly thereafter he was convicted of giving assistance to escaped prisoners and was fined f 6 2/3 for "concealing, hiding & supplying." This display of sympathy toward non-conformists and antipathy toward excisting authorities presaged an early departure from the Massachusetts Bay Colony." [note: John C. Thorn has Wm. Marrying in 1638 with Jr. being b. c1639, this differs from Fleming's account which has Jr. b. 7 Apr 1732 in England.] When William Thorne's name next appears on the Flushing records twelve years after his first visit, it is as a signer of the Remonstrance in which signing he is joined by his son William Jr. a child of his marriage to Susannah Booth whom he had married while at Lynn. In addition to William Jr., born circa 1639, their children included John (b 1640-43), Joseph (b 1642-46), Samuel (b 1648-55) and susannah (Lockerson)(b circa 1645). Philie Thorne says: " William Thorne was one tough & principled man, he left England somewhere between 1635 & 1638; in 1638 he was made a "freeman" of the Mass. Bay Colony this meant he was a puritan in good standing with the church of Boston, was of legal age & was a mand of at least modest means, (the Thorne's in England were all landed gentry many being called by the title of gentleman.) As a freeman, he had the right to vote. There were several thousand persons in the colony by 1638 & he was one of 400 men who were allowed to vote. He became a follower/friend of Anne Marbury- Hutchison (modern feminst icon) she became a loud critic of the church of Boston & tool on the issue of mandated infant baptisms. It was enforced by law that your children had to be baptized as infants. Thus the anabaptist movement in Boston was born with our William being in the thick of things. Also, they all had to flee to first Rhode Island then in 1648 they established the city of Flushing. Two of your direct ancestors were among the 17 english families, our William Thorne as well as Nicholas Pearsall, father of our Mary Pearsall, who married William's son John." Father, dates & location from Fleming, don's know if accurate She says he m&d in England, impossible, unless he returned

He was one of ten residents of Flushing involved in a futile attempt to annex L.I. and was accepted as a freeman. He was considered the head of the family on L.I. His older bro. had presumably died.
