HISTORY OF GARRARD CO. BY CALICO. Obituary of Mrs. Nancy Smith-granddaughter of James Smith and Magdalen Woods-----"Magdalen Woods was captured by Indians when her father was massacred and his residence burned. Instead of murdering her, the savages resolved to adopt her, and so having immersed her three times in the clinch river, and by other initiatory rites pertaining to their customs, transformed her into an Indian girl and she became a member of the tribe. She lived several years with them until a company of French troops camped nearby, and seeing a bautiful white girl with the natives became interested in her ,helped her escape and restored her to ger friends. Soon after she married Rev. James Smith. Her son Henry in his reminiscenses said his mother had been captured by Indians in her youth in Augusta Co. Virginia.
