When Ed was young, he moved with his parents from Cowley County to Atchison County, Kansas. He attended rural school and then high school. He farmed with his father and brothers. After his marriage, he rented and worked the William O'Neal farm. In 1910 the family was found in Wabaunsee County, Kansas. He was 36, Eva L. age 26, Melvin, 4 and Esher (Esther) age 2. He lived at Horton in 1921 for a short time. He was employed at the Rock Island Shops. After the separation and divorce, for a few years that he farmed on the Heineken home place south of Effingham and lived with his mother. He had a close out sale of horses, mules, cattle and implements, at the Heineken farm 6 miles south of Effingham, 2 Mar 1934. He was remarried to Eva in September of that year. In the 1930's, he did truck farming of a smaller area. He grew wonderful watermelons. I was a child and they tasted so good. When we came to California, Uncle Ed took care of our big dog, Blackie, and our old mare, Bird. He had another sale 20 Sep 1961, after his wife died. It was held at his farm located 3 miles north, 2 miles west, and 1/4 miles south of Nortonville, Kansas. He was tall and slender, with sandy brown hair. He was very vocal favoring socialism. Neither of their children lived near, but neighbors, Lloyd and Edith Page, were very good to them in their older years. Many friends and family joined to celebrate his eightieth birthday at the park in Effingham. After Eva died, Ed lived with his daughter, Esther & Barton Lybarger for about four years. His death was caused by a stroke. When he was about 90, I received a short letter from him which said. "I don't do much writing, but I want to do some explaining. Eva married a Garfield Mair, at Oskaloosa, Kansas in April 1902. After two months there was a baby to be. All he would do was lay around drunk and would not provide, so all she could do was go home to her parents. She applied for divorce in 1903. She was granted divorce, her maiden name, and gave Marvin her maiden name by law. This is all in the past and what is past is gone, and what can be done about it? My concern is the future. It may seem as a dream, but there is where we must live, there is still time to amend, so row, row your boat down the stream. Ed"

Notes:
Eva was divorced from Garfield Mair in 1903. Her son Marvin Harvey, of that marriage, married Grace Alexander. They had three children; Marvin Lee Harvey, Jr., Jack Roy Harvey, and Lila Harvey. After many years of marriage, Eva and Edwin Heineken divorced. She then was married 23 May 1930, to William Henry Holmes, a farmer, who lived west of Atchison. He was the son or Mr. and Mrs. James Isham Holmes. She was his third wife and her third husband. About 1931, Eva was living with her daughter in Kansas City, Kansas. A divorce suit was pending in the district court of Wyandotte County. Worry over domestic troubles and a general decline in health, were the incentives for William H. Holmes taking own life, by strychnine, at the home of his son James R. Holmes. On 15 Sep 1934, Eva remarried Edwin Heineken. She was a member of the United Brethren church at Oskaloosa, Kansas. Ed and Eva lived on route 1, Nortonville. I remember Aunt Eva as quite a large woman. She was a good cook. In November of 1960, she had a heart attack and lost about 45 pounds. In the spring of 1961 she had several blood clots in her legs and trouble getting around. She had a goiter, severe gall stones and developed diabetes. She died that summer, in Jefferson County Memorial Hospital at Winchester.

Esther and Barton went to California in 1926 with Barton's parents. They lived in Los Angeles and Alhambra. She worked at the Cudahy meat packing plant. They were still there in 1928. When the parents moved back to the middle west, they moved back also. She has always been a very friendly, social person, with many friends. She is small in height. Esther loves birds, especially red birds. She has quite a collection of them on plates, pictures, etc. She enjoys gardening, sewing and fishing. She has always canned her own fruits, vegetables and fish. She and Barton made a few trips to California by car. She lived in Kansas, California and Oklahoma, living at Grove, Oklahoma in later years with her first husband. Her father, Ed, lived with her there four years, until he died. She visited family in Kansas in Nov. 1974. We visited Esther at Grove, Oklahoma in 1981. After she married Willard she lived in Anderson, Missouri, Rt. 2. We visited them there in August 1994. Willard was a widower and married first to Hazel. He lived on a farm and raised cattle. He owned a small country church and parsonage near the home and there was Bible study on Thursday nights. They expanded the house and remodeled it. They always had a nice garden and loved to share with friends and neighbors. In 1998, Willard fell and broke his shoulder and they needed to be in a care facility at Anderson, Missouri.
