Joshua was baptized into the Church at Huddersfield, Yorks.
Joshua met his future wife Jemima as they crossed the plains together in the James Jepson Company, and drove the team for her and her mother. The company was organized at St Joseph, Missouri, and traveled up to Council Bluffs, crossing the Missouri to Winter Quarters on 29 May 1852. The company reached the valley 28 Aug. 1852.
