Alec stood 6'2" and his exact weight was somewhere between 150-160lbs. It seldom varied so that you could test scales by his weight. He left Scotland to find a career in Canada with his bride, Jean. He was a lithographer and a geographical draghtsman for the Federal Government. He drew maps using a brush with one hair. Alec was a whiz with numbers and could add five columns of figures simultaniously. He was involved with the Masonic Order and had a wide-spread knowledge of the world through his hobby as a falatelist. On black and white television there was a regular programme called, "College Bowl" inwhich students competed in a quiz covering several categories. He was frequently able to answer the questions correctly, even before the competitors. Alec travelled to work on the buses with a German chap. Each day they would alternate which language they would speak in so that they each would learn the other's language.

Jean was a dressmaker in Edinburgh, Scotland. She married Alexander BRAIDWOOD on 15 Mar 1913.
Seeking opportunity in Canada the couple left family and took a ship across the Atlantic to their new home. They settled in Ottawa where "Sandy" was employed by the Canadian government as a Lithographer for the Dept. of Mines. Jean had two daughters, Ana ( known as Nan) and Jean. Jean was an avid gardner and known for her roses. As a former dressmaker she sewed clothes for her family, her granddaughter (she made Valerie's wedding gown), and even her great grandchildren. In her 40's long after she and Sandy had moved to Toronto, Jean took a class in oil painting. Her posterity has been blessed with many a lovely keepsake because of her talent.
