George RITCHIE
Our family records state that Samuel Ritchie was the second husband of Ann Anderson. Her third husband was Joseph McKay. Betsey Ritchie took the name of Joseph McKay and retained Ritchie as her second name. Why she did this is a mystery. From what I have found in my research, Samuel Ritchie was 35 years older than Ann Anderson. It appears that he died after Ann Anderson and Betsey joined the church and went to Ireland where Betsey met Thomas Crawley who then presided over the mission in Ireland. Historically, Samuel Ritchie was a cantankerous old man. Perhaps Ann left him. Joseph McKay evidentally was a good man and much appreciated by Ann and Betsey. Perhaps this is why so many of Betsey's grandchildren took the name of McKay as a second name..such as my was given the name of Lyman McKay Crawley. A search of the Ancestral File 3 Oct 1995 at our FHC shows the work of ten of Betsey's progeny who say that Betsey was the daughter of Joseph McKay. This is not correct I did the temple work for Samuel and his father, George, and his father James in the Denver Temple in 1994. I now find the work had been done previously. Samuels record shows: B: 2 Nov 1940, E= 10 Apr 1942, and SS: 14 Oct 1959. The Ancestral file at at that time showed he had not been sealed to his parents. We did that. on the 22 Apr. 1994..I think was the date.
Another source lists George Ritchie's wife as Susan Murry, This is not correct. Susan Murray was the first wife of Samuel Ritchie and Ann Anderson #2. Yvonne did the initiatory work, and I baptized and confirmed Yvonne for her on the 22 of April 1994. We did this for 5 female members of our family on that day. A search of the Ancestral File 3 Oct 1995 shows the Work for Catherine Hare was done previously. B: 18 Mar 1935, E: 12 Apr 1935, SS: 14 Oct 1959

Holden of Colorado Springs, Co. Ann Anderson Ritchie had 4 husbands, Mr. Alexander, Samuel Ritchie, Joseph McKay,and Mr. Fellows. The records show her to have been baptized the same day as Betsey. * From another source on my family records, it is written that Ann Anderson Ritchie's name was Ellen. She was born May 1788 in Forfar, Forfarshire, Scotland, and she died in 1848. Her husbands name was Samuel Ritchie, and her parents names were David Anderson and her mothers name was Helen Ritchie (?) of Forfar, Forfarshire, Scotland. In Oct 1995 I was searching the Ancestral File at our local FHC and found that Ann Anderson was married to Joseph McKay and her father was Samuel Ritchie and her Mother was Ellen Anderson. At this point, I think Ann and Ellen were probably the same woman. I think Samuel Ritchie was not her father, but her husband and father of Betsey and William. My records now reflect this information, and I hope the matter has been put to rest. The temple work had previously been done: B: 24 Nov 1908, E: 13 Sep 1923, SS 13 Sep 1923. We did his temple work in the Denver Temple again I think in 1994. I have erased the dates inadvertantly. Later research of the IGI 13 July 1997 shows he and his family were sealed together in the Salt Lake Temple 14 Oct 1959. In the book, "Famous Watchmakers of Scotland" Samuel Ritchie was one of the three mentioned. There is still Ritchie clock Co. in Edinburgh. In the little town of Forfar, Scotland the building still stands where his Clockmaker store was, and the big clock still keeps perfect time on the steeple of the town hall and the church.
