Notes:
With Henry Raspe, the brother-in-law of St. Elisabeth of Thuringen, the male line of the Thuringian Landgraves became extinct in 1247,whereupon the Hessens chose Heinrich of Brabant, Elisabeth's grandson, astheir Landgrave. Hessen was separated from Thuringen, and, after a longstruggle with other claimants of the title, Heinrich established hisauthority as Landgrave of Hessen. For a large portion of his territorieshe owed fealty to the Archbishop of Mainz; for his allodial estate andthe imperial fiefs which he possessed, he received in 1292 from KingAdolph of Nassau the hereditary rank of Prince of the Empire. SubsequentLandgraves did not use the title of Prince, but reserved Princess fortheir daughters. Heinrich chose Kassel as his residence, and from him isdescended the present princely house of Hessen, which can thus trace itsline back to St. Elisabeth.
