Daniel STEMEN
Daniel Stemen moved from Fairfield Co., Ohio to Putman Co., in the year 1852, where he now resides. The place was then a wilderness without improvements; but with the help of his excellent wife, they soon made themselves a comfortable home. Mr. Stemen was rather a leader in the neighborhood and especially if any of the new settlers were sick, "Dan", as he is familiarly called, would be sent for and in most cases his advise was taken; if he said they had better go for a physician, it was generally done; and as a rule he was the man to go, and no man would go more cheerfully then he, and being himself possessed of some medical knowledge and skill having practiced for many years veterinary surgery, and being quite successful he would frequently employ such resources as he would have, and sometimes he would give relief. During the fearful epidemic of Diphtheria in 1861-1862 which prevailed to an alarming extent in that county, he would go for weeks without ever going to bed, visiting from one family to another rendering most valuable assistance in taking care of the sick and dying. He is an excellent man and will always be kindly remembered. After leaving Fairfield Co. and settling on his farm, he made frequent visits to the home of his parents, for whom he had a very warm affection. Sometimes he would make the trip on horseback, at others in a wagon, or buggy, and once on foot; in all he has made thirty-three trips from his home in Fairfield Co.; he is a good man and has succeeded in improving his farm and educating his children, the majority of whom are married and living near him; and he and his excellent wife are enjoying the fruits of their early privations and labors. To Daniel and Elizabeth (Berry) were born fourteen children, eight of them still living in 1881. They still reside on their farm at Pleasant Valley, Putnam Co., Ohio on which they moved October 8th, 1852.
