Nicholas STEMEN
Emigrated to Fairfield Co., Ohio in 1803 with his parents Henry and Mary Stemen. This member of our family was one of the noble men of the day. He was a good and successful farmer, and a strict disciplinarian, yet possessed of a kind and appreciative heart, tenderly devoted to his children and relatives. He was a financier and a natural arithmetician, being able to compute mentally the most difficult problems more quickly and more sure to be correct than when computed by other with paper and pencil. Was a member of the Mennonite church.
Daniel Stemen moved from Fairfield Co., Ohio to Putman Co., in the year 1852, where he now resides. The place was then a wilderness without improvements; but with the help of his excellent wife, they soon made themselves a comfortable home. Mr. Stemen was rather a leader in the neighborhood and especially if any of the new settlers were sick, "Dan", as he is familiarly called, would be sent for and in most cases his advise was taken; if he said they had better go for a physician, it was generally done; and as a rule he was the man to go, and no man would go more cheerfully then he, and being himself possessed of some medical knowledge and skill having practiced for many years veterinary surgery, and being quite successful he would frequently employ such resources as he would have, and sometimes he would give relief. During the fearful epidemic of Diphtheria in 1861-1862 which prevailed to an alarming extent in that county, he would go for weeks without ever going to bed, visiting from one family to another rendering most valuable assistance in taking care of the sick and dying. He is an excellent man and will always be kindly remembered. After leaving Fairfield Co. and settling on his farm, he made frequent visits to the home of his parents, for whom he had a very warm affection. Sometimes he would make the trip on horseback, at others in a wagon, or buggy, and once on foot; in all he has made thirty-three trips from his home in Fairfield Co.; he is a good man and has succeeded in improving his farm and educating his children, the majority of whom are married and living near him; and he and his excellent wife are enjoying the fruits of their early privations and labors. To Daniel and Elizabeth (Berry) were born fourteen children, eight of them still living in 1881. They still reside on their farm at Pleasant Valley, Putnam Co., Ohio on which they moved October 8th, 1852.
George and Lydia live on the old farm near Crossenville, Perry Co., Ohio, he and his wife are members of the Mennonite Church. They at one time left Fairfield Co. and moved to Putnam Co., Ohio; but remained only a few years when they returned to their old home.
Henry Stemen remained a widower nearly three years, and on the 17th day of April, 1860, he married Martha Coffman, who was born in Perry Co., Ohio, May 2nd, 1824.
Nicholas Stemen, who now resides near Pickerington, Fairfield Co., Ohio, is a very successful farmer; he has an excellent farm and is very economical, and, like his father, whose name he bears, is a good financier; he is also possessed of a very kind disposition and very liberal about his home, kind to his friends and relatives; he and his wife are worthy members of the Mennonite Church and command the respect of all who know them.
Leah Stemen was married to David Brenneman. They reside on their farm near Delphos, Ohio. Leah has been an invalid for quite a number of years. but is now enjoying much better health with fair prospects of living many years. She and her husband are always cheerful, and have been very successful in life, having a very good home and an excellent farm. They are members of the Mennonite Church.
Benoni Stemen, who resides near Canal Winchester, in Fairfield Co., Ohio, is a farmer, and a successful one; he is a dealer in fine stock, such as blooded horses, cattle, and sheep. Ben, as he is familiarly known, is always cheerful and is what they call a "good liver." He takes special delight in having good things to eat, he has a good home and a pleasant family. He and his wife are members of the Mennonite Church, he takes some interest in politics, and is always ready to take his side of the question; he is very candid in his statements and conscientious in whatever he does; but very determined and uncompromising with anything that appears to him to be wrong, and while he is tenderly devoted to his friends, yet he would rather sacrifice friendship then to do what he believed to be wrong.
David Stemen was for many years a successful teacher prior to his marriage, and for some time afterwards. He is now living in Pickerington, Fairfield Co., Ohio. He is showing the marks of age much more than his brothers who are older than he, no doubt this is in consequence of his having suffered greatly from disease in his early life; he is a noble man and has an excellent family.
