New England History pg 2042  no children He was born in enlgnad, went to Leyden, Holland, and thence came in the Mayflower to Plymouth in 1620.  He was one of the deacons of the Pilgrim church sent to England in 1617 to negotiate for an american home for the colony.  He signed the famous compact in Cape cod Bay, Nov 11, 1620, and afterward was chosen the first governor of the colony.  He served with abillity, and died in Apr 1621 from the effects of a sunstroke.
