John ZWENG
Came to the US in 1852 was a soldier in the German Armay. He was wonded in the leg and for many years used a cane to walk. For that reason he took up the tailoring trade when he arrived in Detroit. Two years after coming to this country in 1854, he moved to Newport, now known as Maine City. He worked for Henry Buttironi and William Drawe tailors. It was while working for them that granpa bought land in China township, from a John Anderis on 16 Dec 1856, for $120. He did not move to the farm until the early 1860's. For many years after, grandpa made men's suits by candle light, of which many were wedding suits. Aunt Mary Saph said to me that when she was a little girl when she was first on the farm, the hooting of owls and noised of wild animals kept he awake at night.
He married Christine Zinger Aft Jul 1860 at China, St. Claire, Michigan . Christine Zinger was born at Germany 25 Nov 1840 .
