White Chapel is a church located on a farm located in Lick Creek Township
in Van Buren County, Iowa. At the time the farm was owned by Ellis
William Schilling Rail's father, Samuel Rail. The farm now has other
owners, and the church has been converted to a barn. There is still a
cemetery located on the farm and Sarah E. (nee Kimmel) Rail, Ellis William
Schilling Rail's mother is buried there. It is located in a field, but away
from the road, on route 16 a little beyond Zion Lutheran Cemetery as you go
from the town of Douds toward Birmingham.
Ellis William Schilling Rail is buried in Maple Hill Cemetery, Birmingham, Van
Buren County, Iowa. Birth, Death and Marriage data confirmed by Family Bible
in possession of (as of 1995) Ellis Clark Rail, son of Ellis William Schilling
Rail.
When we moved to Corning the twins started in 2nd grade but soon put into 3rd grade as each could read well. I left Paul and Robert in large room at hotel while I took E and C (Elizabeth and Clark) to enter in school. Mrs Brown Hotel owner and Maids exected R and P ( Robert and Paul) to scream and cry while I was away, but not a sound. Mrs. Brown and maids said never had ahad such quiet contented chldren. I brought them to be loving and kind to each other. They knew no violence. Ellis arrived a day later with cows and horses one of boxcard and furniture in other end.

Clark Rail's notes
I was born on the home farm, 7 miles south west of Birmingham, Iowa and attended the courntry school until 18 yers. Old. At niunetten entered Brimingham high school and went one year. Then layed out a year to help dad on the farm as all the other boys were in school so I finished high school at 24 yrs of age. Then my brother john and I farmed the home place two years when I entered veterinary school at Kansas City , MO and was graduated from there in April 1917. I was married in June of the same year4 and have practice veterinary medicine ever since until I retired four years ago.l I enjoyed my work altho at times it was quite demanding. I remember one incident that I think proves my statement. The month of March in 1926 I was in bed only 2 hours the whole month so you see what I mean by demanding. My wife was very understanding and a great helpmate in fact I give her credit for most of my success if that is what you call it. A very good manager and a very good economist. Have always felt we had a full life and always enjoyed each others company.

In 1965 Dorothy Taylor visited Warren in Keosaqua. At the time he was confined to the hospital with a hiatel hernia. he still was able to show a keen sense of humor. He was able to give her much information which is contained in these pages. he and Ray would start reminiscing and she could pick up information to be used. Warren spent his last years of retirement making his home with hie necie, Betty Morris and family.

Ray and Lella met because J9im and Sam Rail plastered her father's home and when Ray came to town and had the same name, her father asked if he knew Jim and Sam. Turned out they were from the same family. Ray worked for the Northwest Railway, Omaha, Nebraska, Huron, S outh Dakota a regular run for 24 years. He retired in 1951 at the age of 60 after 30 years service. From 1955 he worked as an accountant and doing tax work for H&R Block in St. Joseph, MO and later had his own accounting office in Tarkio, MO. Ray was called Pappy by all who knew and loved him. At the time of his funderal the town of Tarkio closed all businesses out of respect to him. Lella had had several strokes before Ray's death, but after his death insisted on living on alone. Refused to live with her sons or in a nursing home. Ray accompanied Dorthy Taylor to teh Birmingham area in June of 1965 where they went to the cemeteries and other places to find records of the Rail family. some of which were found in the possession of Leslie Hoaglin in Hillsboro, Iowa. In Oct. of 1966 Ray went to S. California to attnd the Golden Wedding of Ross and Hazel Rail. It was the first reunion of these cousins in 50 years. There were three branches of the Rail family present. Children of Steward Rail, Charley Rail and Samule Raill. All grandchidlren ofAdam. Ray found real joy in his redscovered relatives. He wrote many times of how pleased he was to have had the opportunity to get to know the rest of the family. A real privilege to get to know such fine people and I am sure that all who got an opportunity to know him felt a bit richer indedd.
