214 Dr. Gilan, when past eighty, would mount his horse and canter off to answer
calls from patients who often sent from far.  In 1776 he was "appointed to
examine and store whatever saltpetre was brought into town;" held the office of
clerk of the proprietors of Gilmanton for more than thirty years.  His daughter
Elizabeth's children, who passed much of their childhood at his home, cherished
his memory with great veneration and love.
