J.R. Ricks was the stepfather to Willie Lee Ricks. Per Willie's granddaughter Bonnie Ricks Hayhurst. (who is an LDS member), did research to find that he was: 1. A Texas Ranger and 2. a Preacher. J.R. Ricks raised Willie from a small age. He was somewhat abusive. Willie was told that his mother had died by J.R., but Bonnie found that she may have left and as she was trying to take Willie with her, J.R. and his older children came and took him from her, and threatened for her not to return.

RE: What is the actual birthdate of Willie Lee Ricks? November 6 or November 8, in the year of 1899, 1900, or 1901. Most info. shows Willie Lee as being born in the year 1900. On 13 June 2004 - Conversation with Bonnie Ricks Hayhurst, granddaughter of Willie Lee Ricks (Yell?), and Laurie Ann Ricks Veloz, her sister, regarding Willie Lee's birthdate, Bonnie said ,"she had found Willie as a baby with his mother, Esther Ellen, who was called and went by Este/Estie, on the 1900 census in Texas, and that she had found somewhere that his real birth year was 1899, and not 1900. Also, conflicting birthdays of November 8, and November 6. On Willie Lee's gravestone where he is burried at the Dos Palos Cemetery, Dos Palos, Merced, California, it shows his birth being November 8, 1900. Bonnie said, "that she remembers that he thought it was on November 6, and that is the day he celebrated.
June 8, 2004 - 1910 Census shows John Richard Ricks with children and grandchildren. Willie Lee is listed as Willie Lee Yell, Male, white, single, age 9. grandson, born in Texas, father born in the United Stated, mother born in Texas,
Willie Lee's last name was supposedly Yell, and he took the last name of Ricks because his mother married J R Ricks, when he was a baby. He did not know that actual year he was born.
Memories of my Grandfather: Willie Lee Ricks
As a little girl my grandparents lived in the same town of Dos Palos, CA. I remember grandpa Ricks always having joke things like: plastic false teeth that would jump around, etc. I remember grandma Clara always calling me "Toots" and grandpa would call me "Sugar Bush" and sing a song "Sugar Bush" come dance with me.
Grandpa Ricks liked chihau dogs. Everyone of them he named "Pedro" when one would die and he would get another one. Also, after he could not drive anymore, he rode around all over town on the 3-wheeler bicycle with a basket on the back.
Clara was an avon lady for years, and everyone knew her as the avon lady. I think one of the first ones in Dos Palos, CA., and she sold it for abt 40-50 years. In their house on Center street, she had shelves full of avon, probably abt 1000 pieces.
