Sir Richard de Hoghton 1501-1559, born 1498.  Colorful and virilepersonality: in context of holding second oldest Freedom of Prestoncontested mayorial elections of 1515 & 1527.  Earl of Surrey's deputy asSteward of Amounderness.  Sheriff of Lancashire 1540.  Knight of theShire 1553.  Married four times, children from all four wives.

Apparently Richard's eldest son Thomas:

The Right Worshipful Thomas Hoghton 1559-1580, Born 1518.  ErectedHoghton Tower.  Refused to conform and went into exile for "BlessedConscience Sake".  Liberal benefactor to the English Seminary at Douaiwith his friend Cardinal William Allen of Rossall.  Son Thomas became apriest and served on Lancashire Mission prior to imprisonment and deathin 1584.  Died Antwerp 1580, buried S. Gervase in Liege.  Latertranslated to Douay.

Apparently Richard's 2nd eldest son Alexander:

Alexander Hoghton 1580-1581, married Dorothy, daughter of RichardAssheton of Middleton.  Patron of William Shakespeare.  1580-81 gavehospitality to Edmund Campion, S.J. (1580-81).

Apparently Richard's 3rd eldest son was another Thomas, who is myancestor.
