-STEWART LlNEAGE

Our emigrant Stewart ancestor was Alexander Stewart who was born in 1675 in Ballymena, Antrim, Ireland. Alexander was my 7th great grandpa. He is recorded in New London, Connecticut as early as 1720 where his youngest son Samuel was baptized on July 24, 1720. Even though Samuel was baptized on colonial soil, it is said that he was born on the high seas, so this might
indicate that Alexander had emigrated in 1720.

(Note: Several of our ancestors were in New London, CT at this time, for instance our Chapman lineage and this Stewart lineage. Obviously they knew each other, worked together, worshipped together. Amazing to me that while they knew each other in 1720, what they did not know is that their lines would join by marriage some 150 years later and produce the bundle of descendants that we are today- Kind of makes you look at your neighbors in a different light, doesn't it. tin)

Alexander had married a lady by the name of Margaret Dixon in 1698 in Ireland, and by her had 8 children that we know of, including our 6th great grandpa James Stewart who was born in 1715 in Ballymena, Ireland.

Although Alexander spent the remainder of his life in Connecticut, he did move to a couple of different areas within that state, finally settling in Voluntown. On April 28, 1727, Alexander of East Haddam, CT bought land in Voluntown, CT from Samuel Whalley. On January 20, 1728 Alexander of Voluntown bought land in Voluntown from Charles and James Campbell. On September 25, 1740, his son James of Voluntown deeded land in Voluntown to his father. Two days later Alexander deeded "to my son Thomas Stewart of Voluntown" land by the north side of Pocomuck Pond in Voluntown.

Grandpa Alexander died sometime between the date of that last land document (September 27, 1740) and the date of July 20,1742, when children John, William, James Stewart and Margaret and Thomas Hungerford, all of East Haddam, CT, and Thomas and Samuel Stewart of Voluntown, deeded to their brother Nathaniel Stewart of Voluntown land in that town "belonging to our honoured father, Alexander Stewart, deceased". On May 19,1743, Samuel Stewart of Voluntown sold to Benjamin Pierce part of the land "my father, Alexander Stewart, bought of Samuel Whalley". April 21, 1746, Nathaniel Stewart of Voluntown sold land to his brother Samuel which "my father, Alexander Stewart, deceased, bought from John Stoyell".

The mother of Alexander's children, our Grandma Margaret, had died while they

resided in Voluntown in 1729. Alexander remarried to a lady by the name of Jennet Rogers.

-GRANDPA JAMES STEWART

6th great Grandpa James Stewart was the 6th born child of Alexander and Margaret, born 1715 in Ireland. On July 26, 1727 he was married to Miss Keziah Scoville in East Haddam, Connecticut. (Note: For the Scoville ancestry, please see page 267.)

Grandpa James was granted a "cattle mark" in Voluntown, CT on December 5, 1739. A cattle mark was granted by the court systems to particular individuals, giving them expressed permission to use this mark on their livestock, thereby marking it officially as their property (kind of like
brands are used today). These cattle marks had to be recorded in the town records. James' cattle mark was "a crop of ye left ear and a halfpenny on under side of ye same ear". James would have to literally cut the above description into his cattle's ear to mark them as his property.

On September 25, 1740, James deeded his land in Voluntown to his father, and moved his family to East Haddam, where the majority of his ten children were born. Sometime prior to 1772 the family relocated again to New Milford in Litchfield county, CT, where James died in March of 1772. Grandma Keziah died on August 3, 1789 at the age of 72.

-GRANDPA SAMUEL STEWART

Grandpa Samuel was the ninth child born to James and Keziah, being baptized on November 11, 1753 in East Haddam, CT. As a young man, prior to 1775, Samuel relocated to Williamstown, Berkshire county, Massachusetts. It was there in Williamstown that he met and married his bride, my 5th great grandma Mary Hendricks. Mary was the daughter of Daniel Hendricks and wife Mary Barrett, and was born in 1750 in Williamstown.

You will remember that our Stephen Scott also lived in Williamstown in MA. The Scotts and the Stewarts became very close as neighbors in the mid-1700's, and migrated together when they left MA.

Grandpa Sam was a shoemaker by trade, and never seemed to do very well financially. Sam and Mary had a total of eight children, born between 1776 and 1792, all born in Williamstown. This is the Stewart family that migrated with the Scott clan around 1800 to the Marietta, Washington county area of

Ohio. Grandma Mary had died in 1795 in Williamstown prior to the move to Ohio. Grandpa Sam remarried to a lady by the name of Jerusha Judd.
Grandpa Sam died in 1810 in Marietta, Ohio.

-GRANDPA PHILANDER BARRETT STEWART

Grandpa Philander was born on January 10, 1776 in Williamstown, MA, the second child of Sam and Mary. As a young man of 24 years, he traveled with his parents, siblings, and the Scott clan to Ohio in 1800. This is where the two clans were joined by marriage, with Philander Stewart marrying Sarah "Sally" Elizabeth Scott on May 21, 1801.

Philander and Sally lived in Washington county, Ohio through 1811, birthing six children during those ten years. By 1813 they were living in Jackson township in Monroe county, Ohio, where my 3rd great grandma, Marinda Stewart,
was born on August 26th. Sally gave birth to five more children after Marinda's birth while living in Jackson township, making the total children born at twelve. While living in Jackson, Philander and Sally lost a total of 5 of their 12 children to an epidemic that swept the area between 1819 and 1822. That must have been very devastating for them, to' bury 5 children within a couple of years.

On top of losing five children, Sally also endured the pain of losing her husband shortly thereafter. On April 20, 1824, Philander had gone into the Ohio river during a storm to rescue three women who were caught in a capsized boat, and lost his life by drowning.

After Philander's death, Grandma Sally was left with a huge note or mortgage that was held against Philander that she had to payoff. She lost her property that the family lived on because she couldn't pay the note of $2,000.00.

As the story goes, "Many heroic women would have been crushed under this triple tragedy. Not so with the proud spirited Sarah. Being a woman of unbounded hope, courage and energy, she sold the remaining property and paid the debts. After struggling with the help of the children for four years,
she turned her face to the West, hoping to make a new home and rebuild a fortune for her family. She and two of her brothers, Stephen and James
Scott, unitedly built a flat boat and floated one thousand miles down the
Ohio River. They stopped off at the principle cities to see the sights.
