Henry FRY

Henry Fryone of the old settlers of Muscatine County of a third of century, nowresiding on section 31, Cedar Township, is a native of Somerset County, Pennsylvania, born Jan 5, 1814. His parents George andMary Fry had nine children Elizabeth, Susanna, John, Rebecca, Henry,Katy, Tilda, and Liddie, but weather all are yet living our subject doesnot know. The days of his boyhood and youth were spent upon his fathersfarm, but upon attaining his majority he left home and began working bythe month for farmers in the neighborhood. This he continued for 4years, but when 25 years of age was united in marriage to Miss MaryFitzgerald, after which he purchased 90 acres of land which formerlybelonged to his g/fathers estate. Later he bought a farm of 300 acres,seven years later he sold it for $500 more then he paid for it and boughtanother farm the same year with 300 acres for which he paid $1,700. Hestayed there for 6 years when he had the opportunity to sell for $2,500which he did and then came to Muscatine County arriving in 1855,purchasing 80 acres of land in Cedar Township, and lived there for 8months, when he moved to his present place of residence on section 31 ofthe same Township. He now owns 300 acres of land and and farm 140 acresand rents out the rest. He also raises cattle and hogs shipping 40 to100 heads of hogs annually, but his cattle sales are not as extensive asin former years. Mr. and Mrs. Fry are the parents of 14 children, two ofwhom died in infancy: Noah who was born July 21, 1841, was killed atIndianapolis Indiana, in a railroad accident which was caused by thecollision of two trains, when he was returning from the war; Josiah bornDecember 4, 1842 is a resident of this county; Cyrus born June 27, 1844is engaged in farming in Page County, Iowa; Eliza Jane born February 21,1846 is the wife of John Coder whose home is in Cedar Township, Iowa;Franklin born August 21, 1847 is living in Cedar Township; Sarah wife ofJoseph Marsden was born March 17, 1849 and is a resident of Muscatine;Matilda was born November 16, 1850 and is the wife of Peter Brookhart andis living in Cedar Township; Harriet born June 10, 1852 and is the wifeof Alonzo Epperly a resident of St. Paul Minn; Mary born December 28,1853 wedded William Harvey of Cass County Iowa; Eve born September 30,1855 married Nicholas Herrick a resident farmer of Cedar Township; Johnborn Jan 8, 1858 is living on his fathers farm; William H. born September23, 1862 and died May 8, 1864. He came to 76 Township with his wife bycovered wagon from Lancaster Pennsylvania in 1855 and settled on a farmnow owned by their g/daughter, Mabel Wells. Mrs. Wells recalls storiesof her g/father, who after working from dawn til dark in the fields,would place a lamp in the window to shine outside where he made candlesto help light the home. He is buried in the Letts Iowa cemetery. Hewas in 1850 Shade Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania as follows; Henry 35 farmer, Mary 35, Noah 9, Josiah 8, Cyrus 6, Eliza 5, Franklin 3,Sarah 1 and Matilda age 2 months.
She is buried in the Letts cemetery in Letts Iowa. Mary is listed asMartha in the cemetery records at the Louisa County, Iowa library inWapello Iowa. Notes from obit; She is the mother of Mrs. JosephMorrison living in Muscatine Iowa.
He died in a train wreck in the Civil War.

Notes from History of Muscatine County bookas follows; His father came to Iowa in 1855 and later purchased land inMuscatine county, becoming one of the prosperous farmers of this regionand at one time owning 420 acres of valuable farming property. JosiahFry came with his parents to Iowa when he was a boy of 13. He was justpreparing to enter upon the active duties of life when the Cival Warthrew its shadow over the land and responding to the call for defendersof the Union, he enlisted in August 1862 in Company F., 35 Iowa VolunteerInfantry. The regiment was soon sent to the front and Private Fryparticipated in many of the great movements of the war. He was presentat the celebrated siege of Vicksburg and took part in the battles ofJackson, Mississippi, Henderson Hill, Pleasant Hill, Kenesaw Mountain,Yellow Bayou, Old River Lake, and Tupelo Mississippi, and Spanish FortAlA. He valiantly preformed his duties at all times, as his heart was inthe cause, but no man was happier than he when peace was declared and thegreat armies were disbanded. He received his honorable discharge August.9, 1865, and returned to Muscatine County where he began farming uponpart of his father's place. Here he continued for two years and thenpurchased 40 acres, the nucleus of the beautiful farm of 190 acres whichhe now owns and which is located on section 24, Cedar township, andsection 9, 76 township. He has succeeded admirably in raising grains buthas devoted a great deal of time to live stock, being a successfulbreeder of black polled cattle, Percheron Norman horses and Chester Whitehogs. In 1866 Mr. Fry was united in marriage to Miss Nancy Jane Epperly,who was born in Indiana and came to Iowa with her parents when she wasabout 7 years old. Mr. Epperly entered land in Muscatine county whichhe cultivated until 1868, being then called to his final rest. Mrs.Epperly the mother of Nancy departed this life in 1873. Their remainswere interred in Wagoner cemetery, Muscatine county. The family of Mr.and Mrs. Epperly included 10 children six of whom are now living namely,George of St. Paul, Minnesota, John of Portland OR, Mary the widow ofLevi Ellison of Letts Iowa, Albert of OR, Nancy Jane now Mrs. Josiah Fry,and William of Muscatine. Five children came to brighten the home of Mr.and Mrs. Fry; Gertrude May born June 3, 1867, now the wife of FrankRunyon of Muscatine county, Phenia B. born April 9, 1869 the wife of JudEpperly of OR, Estella Furnace of Louisa county Iowa, Grace who was bornDecember 8, 1874 and died July 14, 1883, and Rolly C. now in charge ofthe homestead, who was born December 1, 1880 and was married December 12,1900 to Opal Wells of Muscatine county.

He came west with his parents at the age of 7 years andsettled on a farm near Letts. There he grew to manhood. He married MissArminda Brookhart December 23, 1869, Four years later he moved to PageCounty, Iowa, where he resided 20 years. The family then moved to a farmnear Cranston and lived there until 12 years ago, then coming toMuscatine. Eight children were born to this union, seven of whomsurvive. His wife preceded him in death June 11, 1921. The survivorsare four daughters, Mrs. Nellie Meeker and Mrs. Mae Riemcke of Muscatine,Mrs. Rachael Meeker of Cranston and Mrs. Pearl Chapman of Atalissa, threesons Albert Fry of Nichols, Thomas Fry of Wapello, and Lewis A. Fry ofAinsworth Iowa, five sisters Mrs. John Coder of Cranston Iowa, Mrs. PeterBrookhart of Letts, Mrs. Hattie Epperly of St. Paul Minnesota, Mrs. SarahMorrison and Mrs. Nicholas Herrick of Muscatine, and a brother John Fryof Letts. Burial will be in the Cranston Cemetery.
Notes from her obit: She came to Iowa with her parents at the age of 10and has lived in this community every since. Her husband died 15 years ago. She is survived by thefollowing children Mrs. Nettie Meeker of Letts Iowa, Mrs. Roy Welsch (my June Welsch husbands Bobg/mother) of Moline Illinois, Mrs. Lillie Hackett of Letts Iowa, WillCoder of Ottumwa Iowa, C. M. Coder of Cranston Iowa. A daughter Mrs.Ella Snyder died several years ago. She is survived by 2 sisters and onebrother, Mrs. Eva Herrick of Muscatine Iowa, Mrs. Hattie Epperly ofMinnesota and John Fry of Letts Iowa.
