Caleb SHAFFER

                   0f first Shaffer direct ancestor known.  He came from Germany in about 1730,
settled in York County, had a large tract of land, married, and raised a
family. From film 1698004, Harry R. Blanset, historian.  Caleb came with two
families (Custer), one Yeager or Jager family, and another Shaffer family to
America from Germany, leaving Holland in December 1735 and arriving in American on August 8, 1736.  A short time later, he settled in York Co., md. and raised a family.  See 11-22-95 notes folder.

Co., 1906 NY:  "Caleb Shaffer, the great-great-grandfather of Josiah D. Shaffer, was born in Germany, and emigrated to America about 1730.  He settled in York county, Penn., about that time, and became the owner of a large tract of land.  He married and reared a family.  David Shaffer, son of Caleb Shaffer, was borh in York county, Pa, about 1741.  He removed to Somerset county, Pa, about 1812, and settled near Holsopple, afterward taking up land from the state, at a place now called Rummel, formerly Greenland.  Here he lived and died, on the farm now owned by Andrew Shaffer.  He was a member of the Lutheran church, and a Whig in politics."  (Vol. 3, pp. 407-8.)
