John IMEL
ID: I2913 Name: John Imel Sex: M Note: JOHN IMEL - b. November 23, 1789, Maryland. d. May 16, 1861, SaltLick Twp., Perry Co., Ohio age 71 y, 5 m, 23 d.* Name of first wife, married ca 1810 in Fayette Co., Penna. is unknown. One son. m. (2) Sarah Skinner - b. April 23, 1788, Somerset Co., Pa. d. Oct. 12, 1847, Saltlick Twp., Perry Co., Ohio, age 59 y, 5 m, 19 d (daughter of the Reverend Nathaniel Skinner and Elizabeth Harned). Seven children. M. (3) March 24, 1850, Perry Co., Ohio to Rosanna Reynolds Henderson (widow) b. 1810, Pa. John and Rosanna had two children. John and Sarah Imel are buried in the Hazleton Cemetery, Saltlick Twp., Perry Co., Ohio. In the Fall of 1970, Jimmie Imel and family of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, made a trip to Perry Co., Ohio to visit the Hazleton cemetery. A couple other descendents had tried to find this cemetery in Saltlick Twp., Perry Co., Ohio without success. When Jimmie and Shirley arrived and started making inquiry as to its location it seemed that none of the local people had ever heard of it. Finally, in the courthouse at New Lexington they ran across an old lawyer who knew where it was located and gave them instructions as to where to find it. It was located in a wild, overgrown section of trees and bruchwood on the summit of a large hill. As Jimmie described it: "We drove down to Saltlick Twp., and climbed through the wilderness to the top of a high hill and found the Hazleton Cemetery. There were about 40 or 50 tombstones, some standing and some knocked over, but after some digging we found the tombstones of John Imel and Sarah. The entire area has been strip-mined all around the graveyard, but someone had gotten a court order which stopped the mining company from strip-mining the graveyard area. . ." *The inscription on the tombstone of John Imel, which Jimmie and Shirley found, was "JOHN IMEL, died May 8, 1861, aged 72 yr, 6 mo, 15 da". ROSANNA REYNOLDS - b. 1810 in Penna. was married Nov. 22, 1838 to Samuel Henderson and had children. On March 24, 1850 she married John Imel. The 1850 census of Perry Co., Ohio lists two Henderson children living with John and Rosanna Imel: Daniel Henderson age 15 and Lydia Henderson age 13. (Perry Co., Ohio Marriages 1818-1878, p. 92). Lydia Henderson is believed to have married Joshua Skinner (1832-1907), son of James King Skinner and Elizabeth Jump. James King Skinner was a half-brother to Sara Skinner, 2nd wife of John Imel. The last record we have of Rosanna Imel is Jan. 29, 1885. She was living in Miami Co., Ohio at the time and sold for $40 a parcel of land which she still owned in Saltlick Twp., Perry Co., Ohio to William C. Schofield. JOHN IMEL - b. 1789 was listed in the 1816 tax records of Saltlick Twp., Fayette Co., Penna. but was missing from the 1817 tax records of that area. On July 6, 1816, he bought of James and Catharine Comley, for $19, a tract of land in Fairfield County, Ohio in the town of New Lexington. This gives us the approximate time he left Penna. His two sisters, Mary Imel Bailey and Phoebe Imel Strait had gone to Ohio a few years earlier. HIS CHILDREN: The three Bible records that I found listed only the children of SARAH SKINNER. They did not include Gabriel and Sarah Jane (children of Rosanna) nor any children of a first wife. But the DAVID IMEL listed in the 1840 census would be a son of John Imel as the 1830 census of Saltlick Twp., Perry Co., Ohio lists six sons and two daughters: 1 son under 5; 2 sons 5-10; 2 sons 10-15; and 1 son 20-30. 1 daughter 5-10 and 1 daughter 20-30. The daughter 20-30 would be Margaret, Sarah's oldest child. The son 20-30 would be an older child since Sarah had no sons of that age in 1830. Careful research has proved that there were no other Imels in Perry Co., Ohio in those early years except John Imel in Pike and Saltlick Twps. And Paul Immel in Reading Twp. Paul was the son of a John Immel and Elizabeth Feitner of Westmoreland Co., Penna. who went to Perry Co., Ohio about the same time as our John and Sarah. However, I have been unable to find any relation between them - and they do spell their name differently. Paul apparently is descended from the Lancaster, Penna. Immels. Luckily, I have a pretty complete list of Paul's descendents and anyone not descended from Paul is surely a descendant of John. Paul had no son David. There is the tradition in the line of Henry William Imel (Son of John and Sarah) that three brothers left Ohio for the West. One settled in Illinois, one in Missouri and one in Iowa. I found the descendants of Henry William in Illinois, a son of Samuel in Missouri, so it must have been David who went to Iowa. DAVID IMEL is listed in the 1840 census of Saltlick Twp. He and a wife are 20-30 years of age. They have a son age between 10-15. This would be their son Nathaniel who would be just 10 years of age, since his father David was still living home in the 1830 census. David must have been married later in 1830 to have a son age 10 in the 1840 census. The 1840 census of Saltlick Twp., lists four sons living home with John and Sarah Imel (David and Nathaniel were married). But the puzzling thing about this census is that it lists a "female under 5 yrs." Their daughter Margaret was 27 and Nancy was 15. No Bible record of Sarah Skinner's children list a third daughter. This must be a daughter of David Imel who was enumerated with the children of John and Sarah. In the 1850 census of Thom Twp., Perry Co., Ohio, there is a Barbara Imel age 16(b. ca 1835) living with the family of Samuel and Mary Chaffent. Since there is no "Barbara" of this age in the family of Paul Immel, this must be the "female under 5 yrs." listed with the family of John and Sarah Imel in 1840 - a daughter of David Imel.
