Peter Imel and his brothers henry, thomas, Jacob and Joseph were brought to America as Hessian soldiers in 1776 from Hesse-Cassel, Germany as mercenaries for the British Army. Shortly after arriving in America, they went AWOL and joined up with the Continental Army. Peter, age twelve, was a drummer boy with General Morgan's Virginia Riflemen which demobilized at Winchester, Va. In 1782. Peter Imel died in the home of his son George near Fairland, Ind. and was first buried in a family plot on George's farm. His old marker is still standing there and it states that he died Jan. 3, 1849, age 84 yrs., 9 mos., 5 das. In 1940, three of his great grandsons (George J. Imel and two brother) moved Peter's body six miles and interred the remains in a grave with his son George in Rockland Cemetery, fifteen miles southeast of Indianapolis, Ind. There are five bodies in this one grave and among four tombstones one reads: "PETER IMEL, 1754-1849 - A SOLDIER IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR". One of the dates on the stone is in error and should read "1764 in stead of "1754". (Our family has seen his grave). You may not have found his war record, but he was there. Thanks for your reply. Dear Amy, I have read your response to my posting of yesterday and have the feeling that you need more convincing arguments to consider the roots of Peter Immel. In all the family charts I inspected in the Rootswe system, some which are excellent and very detailed, I cannot find one clu as to Peter's parents. All it says he was born in Germany. No documantation is available. Since I have looked for many hours and tried to explore all avenues, I am still as much in the dark as you and it sure bothers me. I do run a Rootsweb mailing list specifying in Hessian Soldiers of the American Revolution, and together with many other experts we have been able to solve many such puzzles. To anyone looking for help in their Hessian research I strongly recommend to subscribe to AMREV-HESSIANS-L-request@rootsweb.com and at least check the mail list archives for clues. Many postings have been made to cover the name IMMEL/IMEL, as well as of thousands of other Hessians, and there is nothing else which will give you as much help. Try look for Mailing lists in the top bar, go right down to Miscellaneous, click on Military and the list name should show up. Can't make it any easier for you to do genealogical research. Good luck. Incidently, this is the way to find any Rootsweb mailing list, surname, country, or local. Cheers, John Merz, Hamilton, Canada
