                   Mrs. Gerald C. Hay, Sr. questions birth place. John Mason's grandson,
John Mason of Newton, Illinois wrote her in 1974 that the Mason and Hay
families came from Blair County, Pennsylvania. According to Hay family
records, Simon Gilbert Hay did not migrate to Illinois until after the
birth of his son Millard Fillmore, b. 2-6-1856. Simon Gilbert is first
found in Illinois in 1860 census (Richland County).
John Mason was a large land owner, farmer and stockman. He owned several
race horses and raced as far away as the New York tracks. He was on his
way home from New Orleans where his horses were racing when he died in
