ID: I2903 Name: Henry Imel Sex: M Note: HENRY IMEL, SR. Eldest of the five "Hessian" brothers (My Oldest Known Ancestor) HENRY IMEL, SR. - b. Jan. 5, 1756, Germany. d. Nov. 5, 1848 in Fayette or Somerset Co., Pa. (The Bible of a granddaughter, Nancy Imel Rugg, states that Henry Imel died in Somerset Co., Pa. probably at the home of his daughter Elizabeth Imel Henry. However, I was unable to find Henry's grave or place of death). He was married ca 1778 in Maryland to MARGARET DISHER - b. Sept. 29, 1756 in New Jersey. Died Nov. 29, 1841, Fayette Co., Pa. and is probably buried in the Imel Cemetery there. In the 1880 census of Fayette Co., Pa., the son, Henry Jr. lists his mother as "born in New Jersey." Edward L. Imel of Gowrie, Iowa says the tradition in his line is that Henry and Margaret Imel had five sons and five daughters. My research indicates six sons and five daughters. I could not find Henry Imel in the 1770 census of Maryland - the first record of him is the 1800 census of Belfast Twp., Bedford Co., Pa., which lists his children as follows: 3 sons under 10. (John and Henry, Jr. would be under 10; Samuel ca 14) 1 son 16-26. (Jacob would have been ca 16) 1 female under 10. (Born between 1790-1800 - name unknown) 1 female 10-16. (Elizabeth would have been 13) 1 female 16-26. (Sophia would have been 17) Isaac, James and Mary were already married and not living home. The 1820 census of Saltlick Twp., Fayette Co., Penna. lists the following: 1 male under 10. (Grandson James, age 6, son of Samuel) 1 male 10-26. (This could be either a son of Samuel - or Henry, son of Jacob who was deceased in 1820. Henry would have been 10 or 11) 1 male 26-45. (Samuel, age 34, widower, living home with parents) 1 female 10-16. (Born after 1800, probably ca 1804, name unknown) 1 female 26-45. (Daughter born between 1790-1800) Note: Samuel was the only son who could have been living home in 1820. He married a second wife ca 1833, when he was 47 years of age and had four other children. The 1830 census of Saltlick Twp., Fayette Co., Penna. lists Henry and Margaret with a male between 15-20. This would be James above, now age 16, a grandson. Children of Henry and Margaret: 1. Isaac Imel, b. 1780 in Maryland. 2. James Imel, b. 1781 in Maryland. 3. Mary Imel, b. June 20, 1782, Maryland. 4. Sophia Imel, b. July 2, 1783, Maryland. 5. Jacob Imel, b. ca 1784-5, Maryland. 6. Samuel L. Imel, b. 1786, Maryland. 7. Elizabeth Imel, b. July 24, 1787, Maryland. 8. John Imel, b. Nov. 23, 1789, Maryland. (My ancestor). 9. Henry Imel, Jr., b. Jan. 15, 1792, Bedford Co., Penna. *10. Daughter, name unknown, born between 1790-1800. *11. Daughter, name unknown, born ca 1804 in Bedford Co., Penna. *One of these daughters lived to be 104 years of age. The earliest record I could find of HENRY IMEL was land that he bought of GEORGE BOYLE on Feb. 6, 1792 of 133½ acres located in Belfast Township, Bedford Co., Penna. This would now be located in Belfast Twp., Fulton Co., Penna. Henry Imel sold this farm August 24, 1811 to JOHN WALKER. This would be approximately the time he moved to Fayette Co., Penna. When he purchased the farm from George Boyle in 1792, the deed was never registered. John Walker also did not have the deed recorded. It was only after Walker sold the farm in 1819 to JACOB STOANER that Stoaner had the deed recorded. The obituary of his daughter Mary stated that she was born near "Fredericktown", Maryland, so this must have been where his Maryland farm was and where his older children were born. The farm of Henry Imel was located a short distance north of the farm of a JOHN IMBLE/EMEL in Bethel Twp., Bedford Co., Penna. who bought 286 acres in 1787 and sold them again on Jan. 31, 1801 to a Rachel Mann, wife of Andrew Mann. The proximity of the two farms and the spelling of the names suggests that they may have been related. However, I was unable to learn anything about this John Imble other than the purchase and sale of the land. He was not listed in wither the 1790 or the 1800 census records. FARM OF HENRY IMEL IN BEDFORD COUNTY, PENNA.
(From the Mormon Genealogical Library in Salt Lake City, Utah. Film 43536 pt 16, pp 560-61) On April 5, 1819, JACOB STOANER had the deed recorded in Bedford Co., Pa. by Anthony Shoemaker, Justice of the Peace and David Mann, Recorder. IMEL TO WALKER: KNOW ALL MEN by these present that I, HENRY IMEL of BEDFORD COUNTY in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for and in consideration of the sum of Six Hundred and Fifty Dollars to me in hand paid by JOHN WALKER of the County and State aforesaid, yeoman, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted, bargained sold, released and confirmed and by these present do grant, bargain, sell, release and confirm unto the said JOHN WALKER, his heirs and assigns, a certain tract of land situate in Belfast Township in the County of Bedford aforesaid on the Waters of Licking Creek bounded and described as follows . . . containing one hundred and thirty three acres and one half acre and the usual allowance of sic per cent for roads, etc. (which said tract was surveyed on a Warrant granted to GEORGE BOYLE September 19, 1787 and sold to HENRY IMEL by GEORGE BOYLE, a reference to their Article of Agreement having date of the sixth day of February, 1792.) . . . IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have hereto set my Hand and Seal the Twenty Fourth day of August One Thousand Eight Hundred and Eleven. Sealed and Delivered in the HENRY IMEL (Seal) Presence of : JOHN WOBLE and ABRAHAM WALKER Note: HENRY IMEL signed this deed himself as "HENRY IMEL" which establishes the correct spelling of the name. I had found a Bible record of a granddaughter who wrote the name "HENRY IMMEL" which sent me on a "wild-goose chase" of several years, trying to find a baptismal certificate for a "Henry Immel" in the various church records of Lancaster County, Penna. The original name of "IMEL" I found only in Maryland. During the Revolutionary War, a group of IMEL brothers were brought over as German Mercenaries by the British, to fight against the Colonists. But shortly after landing in America they went AWOL and joined up with the Continental Army. Peter Imel, age 12, was a drummer boy in General Morgan's Virginia Riflemen. The only record of these Imel brothers was that carried down in the line of Peter's descendants. However, the number of Imel brothers varied from three to four and even five. Only two names were remembered: Thomas born 1757 and Peter born 1764. And although Peter's descendants claimed to have lived in Virginia before they migrated to Indiana and had no record of ever having been in Maryland, the tombstone of Peter's son Henry reads: "NATIVE OF MARYLAND". Disher History: There was a Peter Disher, born ca 1750, who lived in Botetourt Co. or Rockingham Co., Virginia who could be a brother to Margaret. This Peter Disher drowned in the James River when the water was at high mark. There was a HENRY DICHER, born ca 1791 in Virginia who was living in Fayette Co., Penna. in the 1850 census. And I found a Frederick Disher living in York Co., Penna. in the 1790 census. But other than these three, I found no other "Disher" spelling. The name has many spellings, such as: DEYCHER, DEYSCHER, DEICHER, DEISCHER, DEYSHERE, TYSHER, TEYSCHER, TEISCHER, etc. I found several of this spelling in Washington County, Maryland, and there was a Deyshere Church there, established in 1747, named after a Peter Tysher, later called Troxell's church and today known as the Salem Reformed Church. In "HISTORY OF THE SWISS & GERMAN PIONEER SETTLERS" by H. Frank Eshleman, p. 240, he tells of an old German woman who owned much land in Lancaster Co., Penna. and sold it to the early settlers: ". . . land back to the Susquehanna River was settled in the neighborhood of Columbia by Farricks, Stricklers, Garbers and others. They purchased their first right from MARY DITCHER, an old German woman who went about making what she called 'improvements'. This consisted of a few sticks put together and a fire kindled and a kettle hung over it. This constituted her claim. Then she would sell out her claim for a trifle, move on and take up another cl
aim . . . she wandered through woods, leading her horse, which was her only property, with her knitting in her hand, clad in sheep skin." I also found the following documents interesting, in which BOSTON TYESHOR apprentices his son William to the Rev. Mr. Samuel Hunter of Frederick Co., Maryland, under date of December 19, 1747 (Liber B - Folio 127, Frederick Co., Maryland): "TYESHOR has put forth as apprentice and servant his son William Tyeshor, aged 9 years and 2 months, unto Rev. Hunter for 11 yrs. and 10 mos. That Hunter will allow and provide for him during the term of 11 yrs. and 10 mos. all necessary cloaths, meat, washing, and lodging. Also to learn him to read and write and cast up accounts according to the custom of the Province in these cases and a decent suit of apparel at ye expiration of term". Since there were no IMELS of any spelling in Fayette Co., Penna. before Henry and Joseph moved there; and since I have found all the sons of Joseph in Union Co., Indiana, I believe the following to be sons of HENRY IMEL and MARGARET DISHER: 1 Birth: 5 JAN 1756 in Germany 1 Death: 5 NOV 1848 in PA, Fayette or Somerset Co 1 Father: [given name unknown] Imel Mother: [given name unknown] [surname unknown] Marriage 1 Margaret Disher b: 29 SEP 1756 in NJ Married: ABT 1778 in MD 1 Children Mary Imel b: 20 JUN 1782 in MD Jacob Imel b: ABT 1785 Elizabeth Imel b: 24 JUL 1787 in MD John Imel b: 23 NOV 1789 in MD Sources: Author: Keller, Velma Byrum (1894-1975) Publication: Allentown, PA: Schlechter's, 1974

Name: Jacob Imel
Sex: M
Note:
JACOB IMEL - Probably born ca 1785 or before. Died in 1816 or 1817. (Was listed in the 1816 tax records of Saltlick Twp., Fayette Co., Penna. but his wife, Martha was listed in the 1817 tax records of same township, which means that Jacob died after the 1816 taxes were recorded. I have no idea of his age, but since his wife was born 1788, Jacob must have been older than she. Married MARTHA - b. 1788. D. Jan. 14, 1875, Fayette Co., Penna., age 87 years. Martha is buried in the Mill Run Baptist Church Cemetery, Fayette Co., Pa. Jacob is probably buried there, too, but has no stone. After Jacob died, Martha married LEONARD HARBAUGH. I believe that Jacob had two children:

2. Henry Imel. Born ca 1811 or earlier.
2. Susannah Imel. Born ca 1816.

I found an item of a Jacob Imel who died in Westmoreland Co., Pa. and left two children, Henry and Susannah in 1835. Since the estate of Jacob Imel of Fayette Co., Pa. was finally settled in 1835, and he had a daughter Susannah, I believe there was a mix-up in the date of Jacob's death, since there was no Jacob Imel who died 1835 in Westmoreland Co., leaving a son Henry and daughter Susannah.

The first record we have of Susannah Imel was in 1826, when Jacob Knable was appointed her guardian. She had had two guardians before this date: the first one had died and another man named Peter had been appointed. However, September 1, 1826, he declined the guardianship and we find Leonard Harbaugh, Susannah's stepfather, making application for the appointment of a third guardian for his stepdaughter, Susannah Imel, daughter of Jacob Imel. Jacob Knable was appointed and served from September, 1826 to December 28, 1836. Susannah married James Knight about 1836.

The family of Leonard Harbaugh is listed in the 1830 census of Saltlick Twp., Fayette Co., Pa. with two children: a son and a daughter, both under five years of age. Therefore, Martha Imel had two or more children after she married Leonard Harbaugh. The 1880 census of Springfield Twp., Fayette Co., Pa. lists a Leonard Harbaugh, age 55, born in Pa. who could be the son listed in the 1830 census under five years of age. He had a wife Elizabeth and son Ulysses, age 15.

If the son HENRY IMEL, born ca 1811 or earlier, was over the age of 14 when Jacob Knable was appointed guardian of Susannah in 1826, then he would not have needed a guardian. The first guardian, Nicholas Knight, appointed when Jacob Imel died, could have been guardian for both children.

SOMERSET COUNTY (PA.) COURTHOUSE.
Estate No. 34 - 1837. (Dated Sept., 1826 and settled February 2, 1837.

LEONARD HARBAUGH makes application for a guardian for his step-daughter, SUSANNAH IMEL, saying that her first guardian, NICHOLAS KNIGHT, is now dead and that PETER ____. Appointed guardian to replace Nicholas Knight, has declined to serve as guardian. He states that Susannah Imel is still under the age of 14 and is without any person to take care of her person or estate. On Sept. 7, 1826, JACOB KNABLE is appointed to serve as Susannah's guardian, who is the daughter of JACOB IMEL, deceased.

On Dec. 28, 1836, Jacob Knable turned over the account for settlement and the settlement on Feb 2, 1837 showed a balance due Susannah Imel of $91.74.

On Feb. 11, 1850, JAMES KNIGHT (husband of Susannah Imel) Petitions the court for a guardian for his minor children. Susannah died about 1845 and James Knight remarried ca 1846 to Hannah Harbaugh.

SOMERSET COUNTY, PA. COURTHOUSE. No. 17, 1850. Dated Feb. 11, 1850, Docket 11. (Petition of James Knight for a guardian for his minor children).

"To the Honorable Judge of the Orphan's Court of Somerset County:
The Petition of JAMES KNIGHT respectfully requests that his children: CATHERINE ANN, NORMAN, DANIEL, MARTHA and ZOLMAN KNIGHT are all minors under the age of 14 years - that they are entitled to a share in right of their mother, now deceased, in the estate of their grandfather, HENRY IMEL, deceased, and that they have no person legally authorized to take charge of their interests. He therefore prays your honor to appoint a suitable person as guardian for that purpose and he will be obliged."
(Signed) JAMES KNIGHT

DANIEL KNIGHT was appointed their guardian by the court on Feb. 11, 1850 and posted bond in the amount of $120."

Note: The death certificate of Daniel Knight (one of the above children) dated March 20, 1917, stated that his mother was "SUSAN IMEL".

Before continuing with the family of Susannah Imel, I am listing below a short history of the KNIGHT family, since the Knights intermarried with Imels on many occasions and the following history may be helpful.

From "KNIGHT TO REMEMBER" by Fannie Knight Geise, 11518 East 10th Street, Spokane, Washington 99206:

JAMES KNIGHT (1774 - 1832) came to Somerset Co., Pa. in the late 1700's and married CATHERINE KING in Somerset Co., ca 1799. Catherine was the daughter of PHILIP KING, JR. (1748 - 1818) and ANNE BROOKE (1751 - 1843). Their children were:
1. Rosa Knight, b. ca 1800. Married Christopher King.
2. Nancy Ann Knight. Married Joseph Mountain.
3. William Knight. Married Margaret Connor.
4. DANIEL KNIGHT, b. July 27, 1809. Married Mary Marietta. (Daniel was the guardian of Susannah Imel Knight's children above).
5. David Knight, b. Dec. 5, 1812. Married Catherine Crossen.
6. JAMES KNIGHT, b. 1814. Married (1) SUSANNAH IMEL and (2) HANNAH HARBAUGH?
7. Mary Knight. Listed in father's Will.

Note: Catherine King above was a sister HANNAH KING, who married the REV. NATHANIEL SKINNER, whose daughter, SARAH SKINNER, married my ancestor, JOHN IMEL, b. 1789, son of HENRY IMEL and MARGARET DISHER.

(2) Sarah Skinner - b. April 23, 1788, Somerset Co., Pa. d. Oct. 12, 1847, Saltlick Twp., Perry Co., Ohio, age 59 y, 5 m, 19 d (daughter of the Reverend Nathaniel Skinner and Elizabeth Harned). Seven children. M. (3) March 24, 1850, Perry Co., Ohio to Rosanna Reynolds Henderson (widow) b. 1810, Pa. John and Rosanna had two children. John and Sarah Imel are buried in the Hazleton Cemetery, Saltlick Twp., Perry Co., Ohio.

In the Fall of 1970, Jimmie Imel and family of Ft. Wayne, Indiana, made a trip to Perry Co., Ohio to visit the Hazleton cemetery. A couple other descendents had tried to find this cemetery in Saltlick Twp., Perry Co., Ohio without success. When Jimmie and Shirley arrived and started making inquiry as to its location it seemed that none of the local people had ever heard of it. Finally, in the courthouse at New Lexington they ran across an old lawyer who knew where it was located and gave them instructions as to where to find it. It was located in a wild, overgrown section of trees and bruchwood on the summit of a large hill. As Jimmie described it: "We drove down to Saltlick Twp., and climbed through the wilderness to the top of a high hill and found the Hazleton Cemetery. There were about 40 or 50 tombstones, some standing and some knocked over, but after some digging we found the tombstones of John Imel and Sarah. The entire area has been strip-mined all around the graveyard, but someone had gotten a court order which stopped the mining company from strip-mining the graveyard area. . ."

*The inscription on the tombstone of John Imel, which Jimmie and Shirley found, was "JOHN IMEL, died May 8, 1861, aged 72 yr, 6 mo, 15 da".

ROSANNA REYNOLDS - b. 1810 in Penna. was married Nov. 22, 1838 to Samuel Henderson and had children. On March 24, 1850 she married John Imel. The 1850 census of Perry Co., Ohio lists two Henderson children living with John and Rosanna Imel: Daniel Henderson age 15 and Lydia Henderson age 13. (Perry Co., Ohio Marriages 1818-1878, p. 92). Lydia Henderson is believed to have married Joshua Skinner (1832-1907), son of James King Skinner and Elizabeth Jump. James King Skinner was a half-brother to Sara Skinner, 2nd wife of John Imel. The last record we have of Rosanna Imel is Jan. 29, 1885. She was living in Miami Co., Ohio at the time and sold for $40 a parcel of land which she still owned in Saltlick Twp., Perry Co., Ohio to William C. Schofield.

JOHN IMEL - b. 1789 was listed in the 1816 tax records of Saltlick Twp., Fayette Co., Penna. but was missing from the 1817 tax records of that area. On July 6, 1816, he bought of James and Catharine Comley, for $19, a tract of land in Fairfield County, Ohio in the town of New Lexington. This gives us the approximate time he left Penna. His two sisters, Mary Imel Bailey and Phoebe Imel Strait had gone to Ohio a few years earlier.

HIS CHILDREN: The three Bible records that I found listed only the children of SARAH SKINNER. They did not include Gabriel and Sarah Jane (children of Rosanna) nor any children of a first wife. But the DAVID IMEL listed in the 1840 census would be a son of John Imel as the 1830 census of Saltlick Twp., Perry Co., Ohio lists six sons and two daughters: 1 son under 5; 2 sons 5-10; 2 sons 10-15; and 1 son 20-30. 1 daughter 5-10 and 1 daughter 20-30. The daughter 20-30 would be Margaret, Sarah's oldest child. The son 20-30 would be an older child since Sarah had no sons of that age in 1830.

Careful research has proved that there were no other Imels in Perry Co., Ohio in those early years except John Imel in Pike and Saltlick Twps. And Paul Immel in Reading Twp. Paul was the son of a John Immel and Elizabeth Feitner of Westmoreland Co., Penna. who went to Perry Co., Ohio about the same time as our John and Sarah. However, I have been unable to find any relation between them - and they do spell their name differently. Paul apparently is descended from the Lancaster, Penna. Immels. Luckily, I have a pretty complete list of Paul's descendents and anyone not descended from Paul is surely a descendant of John. Paul had no son David.

There is the tradition in the line of Henry William Imel (Son of John and Sarah) that three brothers left Ohio for the West. One settled in Illinois, one in Missouri and one in Iowa. I found the descendants of Henry William in Illinois, a son of Samuel in Missouri, so it must have been David who went to Iowa.

DAVID IMEL is listed in the 1840 census of Saltlick Twp. He and a wife are 20-30 years of age. They have a son age between 10-15. This would be their son Nathaniel who would be just 10 years of age, since his father David was still living home in the 1830 census. David must have been married later in 1830 to have a son age 10 in the 1840 census.

The 1840 census of Saltlick Twp., lists four sons living home with John and Sarah Imel (David and Nathaniel were married). But the puzzling thing about this census is that it lists a "female under 5 yrs." Their daughter Margaret was 27 and Nancy was 15. No Bible record of Sarah Skinner's children list a third daughter. This must be a daughter of David Imel who was enumerated with the children of John and Sarah. In the 1850 census of Thom Twp., Perry Co., Ohio, there is a Barbara Imel age 16(b. ca 1835) living with the family of Samuel and Mary Chaffent. Since there is no "Barbara" of this age in the family of Paul Immel, this must be the "female under 5 yrs." listed with the family of John and Sarah Imel in 1840 - a daughter of David Imel.
