Josiah served as a Private in Company L, 6th Regiment of the WV
Infantry. He enlisted on 1 October 1861 in Mannington, Marion County
WV, and was mustered out in Wheeling, Ohio County WV on 10 June 1865,
and lost his left leg at the knee. He moved to Marshall County in
1866, to Brooke County in 1868, to Hancock County in 1878, to Wood
County in 1889, then back to Hancock County in 1900.  The 1880 census
shows the family to be near New Cumberland, Hancock County WV, with
the family name spelled "Whipka". The 1890 Special Census shows him
and his brother Freeman to be in Belleville, Wood County WV. The 191O
Hancock County WV census shows Josiah and Viola had 3 grandaughters
and 1 grandson living with them near Newell WV: Grace Sheets (b:1895),
Willetta Whipkey (b:1893), Ethel May Whipkey (b:1892), and Claymont
Virgin (1901-1918).
    Josiah's year of birth seems uncertain: [1] 1850 PA Greene Co
census gives 1838. [2] his headstone shows 7-5-1841. [3] Alice
Riser McCoy, Whipkey family bible, 1910 WV Hancock Co census, and
death certificate give 1842. [4] 1880 WV Hancock County WV census
shows 1844. [5] In a signed and notarized application for pension
dated 16 May 1912 he gives his birthdate as July 3, 1840.
