Robert Lee Barley lived in the same home with J. Robert Gillis (his great grandson) much of the time from the death of Flora Belle Cannon, when J. Robert was 7 years of age unti l Robert Barley's death when J. Robert was 23.

The genealogy and temple work for the Cannon family who are direct ancestors can be found in the binders which hold the direct ancestor s of J. Robert Gillis. An entire book on the ancestors and relatives of Flora Belle Cannon (great grandmother of J. Robert Gillis) is found in a book entitled The Cannon Book, written by Clarence Cannon. The writer owns one copy.
This is the lady who reared J. Robert Gillis from the age of 5 months until he graduated from the College of Great Falls. Her parents were sure they were going to have a son whom they would name Robert. When she was born , they gave her the name of Robert as a middle name. Sylvia was so tiny, she wor e doll dresses, one of which she kept all of her life. Sylvia spelled her name Sylva when she was young. She joined the Church the same day as the writer , J. Robert Gillis.
David Evans Barley, aged 38 years, a switchman on the St. Loui s and Hannibal railroad living at 2217 West Gordon street, died at 10:50 o' clock last night in Levering Hospital from the shock of injuries sustained a lit tle more than 10 hours previously when he slipped and fell under a St. Louis a nd Hannibal railroad freight train at Clawson Switch, two miles north o f Bowling Green, Pike county. The train caught Mr. Barley on the left foot, pa ssed up practically the entire length of his leg, and crossed his thigh. H e was taken to Bowling Green where he was given medical aid, and then placed on p assenger train No. 2 of the road and brought to this city and removed to Lever ing Hospital. Mr. Barley was born in New Florence, Mo., December 4, 1889. He locat ed in Hannibal 17 years ago last August, coming from Silex, and was very w ell and favorably known here. He had been connected with the St. Louis and H annibal railroad for more than five years. Mr. Barley was a member of Calvar y Baptist Church. . . . Surviving Mr. Barley are his wife, Mrs. Burd Barley, t wo sisters, Mrs. William Henry and Mrs. Hugh Murphy, all of Great Falls , Montana. . . . Funeral services will be held from Calvary Baptist Churc h . . . and interment will be in Mount Olivet cemetery. . . (All of the above cop ied from an undated newspaper clipping)
He married Flora Belle Cannon 17 May 1883 at St.Louis, St.Louis, Missouri . Flora Belle Cannon was born at Hawk Point, Lincoln, Missouri, United States 15 Dec 1858 daughter of David Hubbard Cannon and Cynthia Ann Wombles .
