Material researched and/or prepared by Barbara L. Van NorsdallThe earliest record that has been found of Cornelis is dated Oct 1681. It was reported by Mark Alan Thomas, historian of the Van Aersdalen Family Association in Vol 1, No. 2 of Vanguard the association newsletter. It is when "Cornelis Symons Van Arsdalen" then 16 years old became a member of the Reformed Dutch Church of Amersfoort based "on profession of faith." It further states that on 16 March 1687, "Cornelis Symonsen from Alldael and Altie Willemse" ...were married in this same church.Many genealogists claim that Cornelis Simonsz had three wivies, the first of which was Tjelletje Reiniers Wizzelpenning. Many others claim that he was not married to this person and had only two wives.August 23, 1686, subscription list made by Coert Stevens and Jacob Strycker for the money for a bell:...paid F 24 (Florins). Symen Jansen's sons Cornelis and Jan F 18. (Small untitled account books of the Church Master of the Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church.)Took the Oath of Allegiance to the British Crown in 1687 as a native of the area.. He signed his name Cornelius Simonsen Van Arsdalen.Marriage dates from 1898 Yearbook of the Holland society of New York, Aeltje Willems page 92 and Maritie Dirkse page 94.Mark Alan Thomas reports in Vol 1, No 2 of Vanguard, that on 02 May, 1691 "Cornelis Symonse widower of Aeltie Wellimse Kouwenhoven and Marytie Dirks young dame, both residing at New Amersfoort" were betrothed. This record was filed in "Marriages from the records of the Reformed Protestant Dutch Church of the Town of Flatbush, Kings Co., New York," Vol 1 by Josephine C. Frost, 1915, p 36.In the 1698 census of Flatlands, Kings County, New York, his name was written Cornelis Simontz Aersdaelen having a family of his wife, six children and one slave.Signed his name "Cornelis Symens."On page 253 of Book Six of Gravesend town records is recorded the sale by Sijmon Jansen to his son Cornelis Symonsen on May 10, 1700, of "three fiften accor lotts known by ye no. 30:31:32 (etc), with privilege and commonage upon the beach and Connij (Coney) Island." This was the land Symon had purchased in 1686 of Corneles Willems.Mark Alan Thomas reports in Vol 1, No 2 of Vanguard that on 3 April 1705, "Cornelis Van Arsdalen" was a witness to an agrement at a town meeting to divide the common woodlands at Canarsie, aka: Flatlands Neck, an agreement which was not settled until 1718-19. This is from "The Civil, Political, Professional and Ecclesiastical History and Commercial and Industrial Record of the County of Kings and City of Brooklyn, New York from 1683 to 1884," by Henry R. Stiles, Vol 1, p 71.Entry in the Deacons' Book of the Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church "1710, October 29, received from Cornelus Van Aersdale for a grave and shroud for Symon Van Aersdale, 24 Guldens."Mark Alan Thomas reports in Vol 1, No 2 of Vanguard that on the 1715 list of officers and soldiers belonging to the regiment of Militia in Kings County, Cornelius Simason" was listed in "The Troop". This record is on page 181 of O'Callaghan's book, "List of Inhabitants of Colonial New York."On 26 December 1718, the Board of Supervisors for Kings Co., in the Province of New York, met and "Cornelius Vanarsdale" represented Flatlands. This record can be found in Stiles, p 379. This reported by Mark Alan Thomas.Mark Alan Thomas reports in Vol 1, No 1 of Vanguard that on Dec 25, 1718, a division of the common woodlands at Canarsie, aka: De Baye's Neck of Flatlands Neck, was advertised and on April 20, 1719 the division was made and Cornelius was alloted a total of 55.4 acres in three separate pieces. This is from Stiles book, p 72.In 1738, a census was taken on inhabitants of Flatlands, Kings County New York. It listed Cornelis in a household with four white males above 10 years and four white females above 10 years. This is from O'Callaghan. p 240.Sold his property in Gravesend to his brother, Jan Simonse, and moved to Somerset County, New Jersey, about 1726. However he returned to Flatlands where he died in 1745.Will of Cornelius 
Simonsz Van Aersdalen (New York Surrogates Records, Liber 15, Page 380) - In the name of God, Amen, The 25th day of April in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and thirty eight, I Cornelius Van Aresdalen, of Flatlands, in Kings County, on the island of Nassau, yeoman, being at present in health and of perfect mind and memory, thanks be to God therefore, and calling unto mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of god who gave it and for my body I recommend it to the earth to be buried in a Christian like and decent manner, at the discretion of my executors, nothing but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God. And as to touching such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me in this life. I give, devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form, imprimis, after my lawful debts are paid and my funeral charges are defrayed, I give and bequeth unto Marritie, my loving wife, all and singular, my real and personal estate in Flatlands, in Kings County, abovesaid, for her to use, possess and occupy, and enjoy, without any let, hinderance or molestation of any person or persons, whatsoever, and during the natural life of my said loving wife. Item; I do give and bequeth unto my eldest son Dirk Van Aersdalen my silver tankard as a token for his birth-right. Item I do give and bequeath unto my 10 children by name, Dirck, John, Symon, Philip, Abraham, Jacobus and my daughters Jannettie, Aeltie, Peternella, and Maria, my whole real and personal estate in Flatlands or elsewhere and to them my said children their heirs and assignes forever to be divided equally among them, immediately after my loving wife's decease. Item, since my daughter Jannettie, which I have procreated by my former wife, has had her mother's inheritance it is my will that she shall have no part of that inheritance that came to me by my present wife Maritie, as an inheritance of her father's estate, which is to be divided among my 9 children by my present wife. We are enclosing a proxy to you drawn up with the assistance of our ministers and our judges in accordance with your instructions and we hope it is complying with the Orphan's Court's regulations.Our sister Jannetje Simons van Aarsdal who was married to a certain Bogaert died round about Christmas last year. She had been paralyzed and was confined to her bed for several years.
