William GORTON

1. Lydia's father was a Friends preacher in Carlestown.
1. Soon after his marriage to Susanna (2nd wife) he moved to Richmond, NH, buying on the 21 SEP 1786 80 acres of land. He sold this farm, receivung payment in the currently circulating currency which was repudiated by the Legislature before he could re-invest it. The Society of Friends, of which he was a member, presented him with a sum of money to make up a part of his loss. He then moved to North Adams, MA, establishing a weaving and retail cloth business. He moved in 1800 to Hancock, MA .
1. By his father's will he was placed in his brother Benjamin's care at age 13. On 9 MAR 1778 he leased from the Rhode Island government a farm at point Judith. The trade which he and others were carrying on between Point Judith and Block Island was declared inimical to the colony. Soon after, a company of British foragers raided his farm and carried off most of his stock. On 25 MAR 1779 he moved to Nine Partners, Dutchess Co., NY where he bought over 8,000 acres of land. According to Adelos Gorton, "on account of his dignified and gentlemanly bearing, he was called General." Quoted from Adelos Gorton, p 212
1. Collins, a Quaker, owned an interest in the "New London Gazette", one of the earliest newspapers of the region.
He married Lydia Collins 1736 at Cranston City, Providence, Rhode Island . Lydia Collins was born at Westerly, Washington, Rhode Island 1714 .
