Michael Clore. In my article in the William and Mary Quarterly,Vol. XXVI, 181, I endeavor to assign certain children to this Michael. Iam satisfied now that all the children given there were the children ofMichael Clore, son of John Clore. There is then no record of thisMichael, son of George Clore, following the probate of this will. Heprobably died young.
Page 23-24:
Michael Clore (son of John Clore) was born December 1, 1746, diedDecember 7, 1817, in Madison Co., Va. The title "Big Mike", applied tohim, to distinguish him from other Michael Clores, suggests that he was aman of large size. The Quarter-Master General's report for District ofCharlottesville shows that he was paid for his services as blacksmith,October - December, 1781. Tradition claims that he was a gunsmith. These services qualify his descendants for admission into the patrioticsocieties. He was also a cabinet-maker. The Clores living near Madison,Va., today, furniture makers, may have received their craft by directinheritance from him. The writer has a pair of half-round mahoganytables, made in very substantial manner and still in good condition. These tables were in possession of the Clore family near Madison for morethan a century. They are clearly of the Heppelwhite style which was thevogue about 1780. The writer believes that in all probability they weremade by Michael Clore himself. Michael Clore was one of the executors ofhis father's will. In 1782 he was taxed for 185 acres, in 1786 for 48acres. In Madison Co., Va., he was taxed for 186 acres down to 1814, inwhich year his land was described as lying 3 miles east of the CourtHouse and on the Robinson River, which seems to identify it as part ofthe land which Michael Clore bought of Christopher Moyer, 1744. [Ahandwritten note, probably made by Delma Carpenter, Sr. says this is "abad guess" and in fact Michael purchased the land rather than inheritedit.] The land is also described as joining land of John Clore, dec'd.In 1814, Michael Clore was taxed for 500 acres, "from Weaver's Estate",lying on the Robinson River, and in 1815 and 1816 for a total of 686acres. Michael Clore married Margaret Weber (Weaver) in 1769, who wasborn December 19, 1752 (according to the Hebron Birth Register) orDecember 21, 1752, as given by tradition. She died November 24, 1842.She was the daughter of John Weber by his wife Barbara Kaffer (Cafer, etc.), daughter of Michael Kaffer of the 1717 colony. John Weaver wasthe son of Peter Weaver who died 1763. Michael Clore and wife Margarethad 16 children of whom the first five are recorded in the Birth Registerof Hebron Church.

The newsletter Beyond Germanna, Vol. 11, No. 4, July 1999, Published andedited by John Blankenbaker, PO Box 120, Chadds Ford PA 19317-0120 has anarticle on the "Parentage of Michael ("Big Mike") Clore". Authors of thearticle [John Blankenbaker, Nancy (Moyers) Dodge and Cathleen "Cathi"(Clore) Frost concluded that, based on land and baptismal evidence, thisMichael Clore was most likely the son of George Clore and BarbaraWeaver. In Germanna Record #10, he was identified as the son of JohnClore. A letter written by John Clore of Crawfordsville, IN in 1895 tohis cousin Howard D Clore of Norwood, IA (in possession of Cathi Frost ofSt. Helens, OR) also identifies Michael's father as John Clore. In alater article published in Beyond Germanna [look up date], I (Cathi CloreFrost) concluded that "Big Mike" was indeed the son of John Clore. Theland evidence of the first article proved to be inacurate. George alsohad a son of that name but circumstantial evidence indicates he must havedied without heirs, most likely young and unmarried.

John Clore (son of John Clore) was born January 22, 1749, diedDecember, 1824, married Margaret Blankenbaker, who was born November 28,1749, died January 6, 1840, daughter of Michael Blankenbaker and wifeElizabeth Barbara Gaar, said Michael being the son of John NicolausBlankenbaker of the 1717 colony. John Clore and Margaret Blankenbakerwere probably married in 1767 in which year she was sponsor at thebaptism of Julius Christler, son of John George Christler. She alsoserved as sponsor of other children of John George Christler, 1769 and1773. John Clore, Jr., and wife Margaret Clore served as sponsors ofseveral of the children of Michael Clore, 1770, 1772, and 1773. For someunaccountable reason the baptisms of their own children do not appear inthe Register. John Clore and wife later joined the Baptist Church butprobably not before 1775. [Note from Cathi - They are on the communionlist for Christmas 1776 at Hebron Lutheran, see below.] In 1787, 1788,and 1792 John Clore was taxed for 278 and 211 acres, Culpeper Co., Va.In Madison Co., Va., 1814 he was taxed for 133, 75, 100, 160, 22, and 178acres, described as lying 9 miles north of the Court House, on theRobinson River and joining land of William Strother. These lands seem tohave been in part at least portions of the patents of Michael Clore. OnFebruary 7, 1799 John Clore and wife Peggy sold to Thomas Shurley andZachary Shurley. Three letters of this John Clore are in existence andnow owned by Mrs. Emma Clore Vetter of Norfolk, Virginia. The first ofthese letters is dated May 23, 1805, from Madison Co., Va. to his sonBenjamin Clore and other of his children in Kentucky. The second letteris dated October 31, 1809 and is addressed to Benjamin Clore, JeffersonCo., Ky., also to Elijah, Lawrence, and Solomon Clore, and his son-in-lawJesse Yager. This letter mentions land which he owns in Kentucky whichsomeone else is claiming and he instructs Benjamin Clore to hire a lawyerand defend his claim. He also speaks of trying to sell his land andmoving out to Kentucky. But he never did. The third letter is datedMarch 29, 1810 and is addressed to Benjamin and Anna Clore, Elijah andFrances Clore, Lawrence and Lucy Clore. He says that his son Abraham isplanning to move to Kentucky the following fall and that he is to occupyhis (John's) farm. He also recites several business matters he iscarrying on for Shirleys and Wilhoits now living in Kentucky who had oncelived in Madison Co., Va.
The records of the Robinson River Baptist Church show that in 1825 acommittee was appointed to write the history of John Clore's life, hehaving recently departed. Evidently he was considered a man of someprominence. Unfortunately this history, if ever written, seems not tohave survived.

In 1808, five brothers by the name of Clore traveled from Culpepper[sic], VA and settled on a 2,000 acres tract in the same area as the Rossgrant. The brothers were Benjamin, Elijah, Lawrence, Solomon and James. The brothers also brought their three sisters: Elizabeth, Ann andSarah. Most of the migrating families were of German ancestry and camefrom Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia. According to the writings ofW.C. Barrickman, the settlers from Virginia probably came over the"Wilderness Road," while the others came by boat down the Ohio River fromthe Monongahela River in Pennsylvania.

Frances Clore (daughter of John Clore) married Herman Wayman(Wehman) in Culpeper Co., Va. (present Madison Co.), April 1, 1792. Shewas his second wife, his first wife having been Elizabeth Clore, daughterof Peter Clore. Thus his two wives were first cousins. Harmon (sic)Wayman applied for a pension for services in the Revolution, April 23,1834, while a resident of Boone Co., Ind. The application states that hewas born August, 1750 in Culpeper Co., Va. He enlisted September, 1777and served two months as a private in Capt. William Chapman's company; inthe summer of 1778 he enlisted and served two months in Capt. HenryHill's company; again in December, 1778 he served 14 days; in the summerof 1779 he served two months in Capt. Henry Toal's company, and in thefall of 1781 he served two months in Capt. Rise's company. Hisapplication was granted. From another source the writer is informed thatHerman Wayman was born August 19, 1750, died June 19, 1837. These datesare probably correct. He probably died in Boone Co., Ind., and is saidto have been buried at Lebanon, Ind. He moved from Madison Co., Va. toCampbell Co., Ky. about 1800. He appears as a taxable in that county in1802 and later till about 1823. In 1815 he is described as owning 48acres on Bank Lick Creek of Campbell County. Sometime after 1823 he wentto Boone Co., Ind. The last mention found of Frances is dated August 26,1811, when as wife of Herman Wayman in Campbell Co., Ky., she joins himin a deed.
